That's good to know also. I have had a couple that I could not fix that this may well have repaired. Matter of fact, I have one at the house now that I KNOW has a intermittent problem that I have not been able to track down.

I'm helping a new owner of a 2006 Capo who had his dash damaged by a jumpstart gone awry. The seller called me for help because I've repaired my own dash (partially; I still have Euro units and it reads 20 @ 60 mph). I've only seen photos of his dead board - all the little input inductors to the right of the big capacitor are burned badly. The regulator chip looks burned too. Anyway the original ST chip is not in stock anywhere that I could find. But I found an alternate that is very very close, Infineon TLE 4470. Has anyone tried this alternate chip? or found the original in stock? Or if anyone has a working dash circuit board for sale please PM me. Thanks!

I found the OEM chip at a place called "UTSource" I think. However, if you want it any time soon it's $50-$75 in shipping, else it's $8 but 4 - 6 weeks to come from China or the Philippines or something. The TLE 4470 DOES look really close! At this point I don't care if I have replicate the IC functionality on a bread board under the seat - I just want me $hit working again!!!

Well, My dash has been acting funny lately so I did like I always do, Look on AF1 to see if it has already been identified with a fix handy. Let me explain what my Dash was doing (It's both similar and different than the other issues) and what I found.

    SYMPTOMS:
    1. When cold outside (60 degrees or lower), my dash would be dead like has been explained in the Thread. No gauges, No Tach/Speedo, no LEDs. Just the 3 Big indicators across the top of the Dash.
    2. After a few minutes, the LEDs would begin to flicker and flash and eventually, the Dash would come alive.
    3. If I turned the Key off after the Dash started working, I would end up with a light show of flashing LEDs all over the Dash. Sometimes for several minutes.

    ATTEMPTED REPAIR:
    1. I diligently followed the great instructions in this Thread and thought to myself, "That outta do it" and it did. Or so I thought. I reassembled the Dash and felt quiet proud that I was able to fix this problem for no money!
    2. The Next morning, I went out into the garage and turned the key..... and to my surprise, no Dash.

    ULTIMATE REPAIR:
    1. This whole COLD-HOT issue lead me to think there may be another cold solder joint or crack in a trace. I looked everywhere and saw no signs at all.
    2. After looking at the voltage regulator DataSheet, I tested all the connections and still found nothing. It looked and measured fine except that the vOut2 was 0 volts while cold. That output powers the LEDs and gauges. vOut1 powers the top indicators and clock.
    3. Re-visiting the HOT/COLD idea again, I grabbed a can of Freeze spray and a Heat gun.
    4. Applied heat to warm the voltage regulator area up and the Dash came alive.
    5. Freeze sprayed the area and the Dash died.
    6. After isolating things down more and more, I found a defective 16v 47uf capacitor just to the left of the voltage regulator. And guess what, that is the timing delay circuit for the Vout2 part of the regulator. I went to radio shack and bought a $1.00 replacement cap and soldered it onto the board and vollia, the Dash works both Hot and Cold. (See Pictures)

    CONCLUSION:
In the end, my symptoms were slightly different and eventually called for a different repair. I elected to add the jumper wire for preventative measures and called it a day.

The final failure on my Dash was caused by a defective capacitor in the reset timer part of the Vout2 voltage regulator.

As a note, if you attempt this repair or any repair on Surface mounter board, great care must be used. You'll see that I took great care but still ended up lifting the Positive end of the Caps, trace. To repair my mistake, I simply scraped/cleaned off the protective paint on the circuit board and soldered the Cap leg across the missing trace. Not pretty but it works. Along with a drop of super glue to keep the cap still.

Sweet - can you fix my dash! POS! Try removing the VR IC AND putting a replacement in without mucking things up!

The scraping paint / soldering to the trace thing works great on larger traces, but I FUBAR'd a couple that have TINY traces, and can't really solder to those. I've resorted to tracing the traces and hardwiring and/or using silver epoxy. That silver epoxy is expensive, but it's saved my a$$ a few times!

    So, you're certain VO2 is the LED's?

And, what's that 3 legged tiny chip below your new cap; or in your pic to the left of your cap? Mine fried and I have no clue what to replace it with.

If you had a lot of components fry on your board, that is not a good sign. The 3 leg component is more than likely a transistor.

    anyone able to confirm this?

    Probably

Basic physics says yes, rotating the needle on the shaft will cause it to break free far easier than simply pulling on them. But, I'm not familiar with the internals of the stepper motor and feared that spinning it around may damage the motor. I'm probably being overly cautious now, since my.... lack of attention has caused me GREAT grief....

Matches my Fut dash temp sensitive symptoms. Jackpot !
OK, and twist the needles off. Check.
Think I'll go with a surface mount cap tho'.

    Thanks all!

Had open dashboards & find how is connected displays , there is no connectors with pins, but only two tracks in contact maintained by two or three plastic clips , try to clean tracks with elec solvent , but displays don't come back.
I'll try to change diplay by another (I've 3 dashboards but anyone works correctly ,one completly out with black capacitor soldering seem burned, the other without diplay of the right part and the last one is ok but display have not all segments )
Hope to get one working. Some pic of the tracks & capcitor soldering .

I've lived with a nagging issue on my Caponord for a few years now. I'd bought this bike second hand and the original owner had dropped it on the Denali highway. It cracked the dash housing. The dash worked perfectly the first 2 years I had the bike. Now, several of my pie slices on my fuel and temperature pie charts aren't lighting up. This also causes some of the numbers to read strangely. This all occurred during a 4 day rain soaked ride a few years ago. Bike was parked outside on the 4th night in steady rain and we woke up to puddles around the bikes. The dash hasn't been the same since. It lights up blue, all the mileage features work, speedo, various dash lights, just the pie slices and a few digital numbers are off. I read through here and it doesn't seem to be mentioned that others are having these types of issues. Just wondering if old mean streak has any ideas about this particular issue.
    While alive, he lived!

Just a quick thanks to Meanstrk and those that contributed to this thread. Had to jump start my Futura and lost the dash in the process. Bought a soldering iron and some thin gauge wire and followed the instructions/pictures on here and it worked like a charm.
I think i ended up spending more time trying to get the tach and speedo needles lined back up correctly than I did on the repair but all works perfectly now.

    Thanks again,
    king
