Aprilia SBK Brno Round Review
MAX BIAGGI GRITS HIS TEETH AT BRNO AND EARNS IMPORTANT POINTS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
TWO GOOD PLACINGS FOR EUGENE LAVERTY WHO SUFFERED WITH GRIP PROBLEMS.
Brno, 22 July 2012 – Two strong finishes, coming back from the fourteenth spot on the starting grid, allowed Max Biaggi to hold onto the championship leadership. The Corsair now has a 21 point advantage over Melandri following his sixth and fourth place finishes on the Brno track.
Race 1 was marked by a start on a wet track, which dried off after the first few laps. In the middle phase of the race Max was one of the fastest on track, but the time lost at the beginning kept him from moving farther forward than his sixth place finish.
The second race, run completely in the dry, was the scene of a good start by Max which allowed him to catch up with the front riders. Biaggi moved into fourth place during the sixth lap and was able to hold onto it for the rest of the race and under the chequered flag.
“Unfortunately we couldn't do any better than we did today – said Max Biaggi right after the races – We had some big problems with chattering which compromised every move I made. In Race 2 I tried not to lose touch with the front pack, but I just couldn't maintain their pace. I was already at the limit as if it were the last lap. We still haven't figured out what the problem is, since both the bike and the set-up are very similar to what we were using at Aragon. I just hope that we don't have the same problem in the rounds to come”.
After showing excellent pace during the test sessions, Eugene Laverty struggled more than expected for the races. The two fifth place finishes definitely don't leave Eugene and his team happy after all their hard work this weekend.
“I'm not happy with these two fifth place finishes because we could have done much better. Unfortunately in Race 1 we chose the wrong tyre, and then in Race 2 we ran into grip problems that we had only had in the second qualifiers and Superpole 1. It's a shame because we deserved more today. We're taking home some important points, but definitely not as many as we had hoped for”.
