EVERYTHING you can do with your dash display, and a few things you shouldn't do as well:
    • How to reset the oil can and wrench icons
    • How to change the oil can and wrench icon intervals, or disable them completely
    • How to use all the arcane lap timer functions
    • How to change the rpm when the shift light comes on
    • Enable/Disable unknown functions

All data without guarantee--it is your own responsibility!

    Cockpit Display Functions
The cockpit display has many functions available to the rider. From the factory several functions are disabled to eliminate confusion. All functions can be enabled, or only the desired functions (see Programming section below).

When all functions are enabled they are presented in this order:
    • ODO - odometer
    • TRP - trip meter
    • AVS - average speed (since last reset of trip meter)
    • LAP - lap timer (HH:MM:SS displayed)
    • LAP - lap timer (MM:SS and tenths displayed)
    • CLK/ODO - clock/odometer
    • CLK/rpm - clock/rpm
    • rpm/ODO - rpm/odometer
    • SPEED MAX

Pressing the MODE or SCROLL button cycles to the next feature.

    MODE and SCROLL Buttons
The MODE button is the black button located to the lower left of the display. The SCROLL button is the button located on the left hand grip. Both buttons are identical in function as far as I can determine, except in one rare case (programming rpm red line threshold).

    FEATURE DESCRIPTIONS
Below, is a functional description of each display feature and the related symbol that appears in the display for each.

    Odometer (ODO)
Displays total distance in either miles or km depending on which unit system the display is programmed for. The unit system can be changed.

    Trip Meter (TRP)
Displays total distance since the Trip Meter was last reset. To reset the Trip Meter, press SCROLL and hold for 4 seconds. This also resets the Average Speed (AVS) feature.

    Average Speed (AVS)
Displays the average speed of travel since the Trip Meter was last reset. Average Speed does not account for time when the bike is stopped. To reset the Average Speed, press SCROLL and hold for 4 seconds. This also resets the Trip Meter (TRP) feature.

    Lap Timer (LAP) - HH:MM:SS
    -and-
Lap Timer (LAP) - MM:SS TENTHS

There is only one lap timer, but two separate functions that display it differently:

    1. The first displays speed (Mph or km/h) and "HH:MM:SS".
    2. The second displays "MM:SS" and "rpm-T0", where T is tenths and the zero is fixed and never changes.

Each Lap Timer feature operates identically as follows:

    • When scrolling to the Lap Timer feature, the timer display will be all dashes (i.e., "--:--:--" or "--:--)".
    • To skip the Lap Timer function, press and release SCROLL to go to the next function.
    • To show/hide the Lap Timer, press and hold SCROLL for two seconds. When the Lap Timer is shown, the dashes will instead be the actual time reading.

If the Lap Timer is shown you can perform the following operations:
    • To start/stop the Lap Timer, press SCROLL momentarily.
    • To reset the Lap Timer (and stop the timer if it is running), press and hold SCROLL for four seconds.

To leave the Lap Timer running and display a different feature:

    • Hide the Lap Timer by pressing SCROLL for two seconds. The display changes to dashes.
    • "LAP" blinks to let you know it is running.
    • Use the SCROLL button to rotate through the other functions. "LAP" continues to blink.

    Clock (CLK) - HH:MM:SS
    -and-
    Clock (CLK) - MM:SS / rpm

There are two functions available that display the clock, as follows:

    1. "HH:MM:SS" display
    2. "MM:SS" and rpm display

    SETTING THE CLOCK

    • To set the clock, one of the two CLK modes must be displayed.
    • Press and hold SCROLL for 7 seconds. The first set of digits begins flashing.
    • When digits are flashing (either HH or MM or SS) you have only 4 seconds to alter the value before the display moves on and the next set of digits begin flashing.
    • Change the value shown by the flashing digits by depressing SCROLL once to increase the value by one. Hold down SCROLL to cause the digits to more quickly count upward. For hours, the display reads either 00-23 (for 24-hour format) or 01-12 with "am" or "pm" (for 12-hour format). Make sure you set it accordingly.
    • When the correct value is reached, simply do nothing for 4 seconds. The value you have set stays, and the blinking moves on to the next set of digits. Alter each set of digits by the same procedure.
    • When all digits have stopped blinking, the new time (if you changed it) is set.

    12-HOUR and 24-HOUR FORMATS
If the unit of measurement is set to Mph, the time is displayed in 12-hour format with "am" or "pm" appearing. If the unit of measurement is set to km/h, the time is displayed in 24-hour format. There is no means to alter this.

    Engine Rotation (rpm)
This feature displays engine rpm. There is also a corresponding bar graph display that is displayed no matter which display feature is active.

An rpm threshold can be programmed above which the RPM Threshold Indicator (shift light) illuminates.

    SETTING THE RPM RED-LINE THRESHOLD
I am under the impression that the factory rpm threshold is set at 8,000 rpm. This may vary by model, however. Many riders want to raise the threshold for racing purposes, or disable it altogether.
    • The display must be showing the rpm function
    • Press and hold MODE (not SCROLL!) for 4 seconds, until the display shows five dashes "-----".
    • Release the MODE button and the display reads the current rpm threshold value (i.e., "08000") and the first digit is blinking.
    • You have 2 seconds to change the blinking digit by pressing MODE or SCROLL momentarily to increment the blinking digit by one. Keep pressing until the desire value appears.
    • After 2 seconds of inactivity the value is set, and the blinking moves to the next digit.
    • The last two digits always remain zero and cannot be changed.

I believe the RPM Threshold Indicator (shift light) can be disabled by either setting the threshold value to "00000" or to an unreasonably high number.

    ?????? QUESTIONS ???????
The above programming operation is the ONLY time that I have seen the MODE and SCROLL buttons not do EXACTLY the same thing! If you try to enter the programming mode by holding down the SCROLL button for 4 seconds, then "max" and "min" appear in the display. But, when you release, it advances to the next function (SPEED MAX, if enabled) and does nothing that I can tell. If you hold SCROLL for 10 seconds, then "WS" appears, but still no effect when released.

Also, if you use the MODE button, but hold it for 10 seconds, the dashes ("-----") change to "08000" and "WS" appears. But when the button is released, it appears to go into the normal programming mode with no difference.

    Maximum Speed (SPEED MAX)
Displays the highest speed traveled since this function was last reset. To reset to zero, press and hold the SCROLL button for 4 seconds.

I have occasionally noticed the Maximum Speed on my RXV 550 displaying something outrageous, such as 129 Mph. I believe that occasionally if the wheel magnet on the brake rotor stops right at the location of the pickup sensor, that sometimes the pickup may register two "hits" in a row, and, thus the computer thinks the wheel traveled a complete rotation in a very short period leading to the unreasonable reading.

I have never seen a reading above 129 Mph, and I strongly believe that figure is the upper limit of the display's capability. Anyone on this?

    GENERAL INFORMATION

Two Oil Cans and a Wrench!
Next to the display, there is a bright red illuminated oil can lamp. This is the low oil pressure warning. Don't ignore it! On the LCD display is an identical oil can icon, that appears (non-illuminated). This is a service interval reminder telling you it's time to change oil. There is also a wrench icon telling you it's time for engine maintenance (valve check, etc.)

The factory set intervals are every 13 hours for the oil can icon, and 45 hours for the wrench icon. These can be changed.

    Keep it Dry!
Cover the Cockpit Display with a baggie when washing the bike or during rain. Humidity or condensation will also affect it. If moisture seeps in, you may see condensation on the inside of the lens. The display may go blank and stop working, or, it may function erratically. Most owners have reported that after it dries out things go back to normal.

    NOT Related to the ECU
The Cockpit Display is NOT functionally a part of the ECU computer. They are separate, and, they are on separate fuses. You do not need the Aprilia Axeone computer to program the Cockpit Display. If the display goes dead (as it is prone to do if it gets moisture), or is removed, the bike will still run fine.

    Cockpit Display Programming
The following comes from various sources including the manuals, lots of experimentation, and a German document that was translated by me (using Google Language Tools).

    Enable/Disable Individual Display Functions
Numerous functions are available from the cockpit display and can be rotated through when the display is on using the SCROLL button located on the left handle grip or the black MODE button on the display itself located under the neutral gear indicator:
    • ODO - odometer
    • TRP - trip meter
    • AVS - average speed (since last reset of trip meter)
    • LAP - lap timer (HH:MM:SS displayed)
    • LAP - lap timer (MM:SS and tenths displayed)
    • CLK/ODO - clock/odometer
    • CLK/rpm - clock/rpm
    • rpm/ODO - rpm/odometer
    • SPEED MAX

The availability of each function can be enabled or disabled (so they appear or don't appear in the rotation) by the following procedure:
    • Start engine (you may stop the engine immediately if you like, but you must leave the ignition on so the headlight is operating).
    • To ENABLE a function: press MODE or SCROLL until the speedometer function is active. ALL functions will be restored, and you will then have to delete any functions not desired to be in the rotation.
UPDATE: Apparently some owners have experienced the speedometer display fixed at "0" or not displayed. Aprilia Tech Bulletin 012-2008.pdf (PDF 19 KB) provides additional information about restoring the speedometer function. Refer to this tech bulletin if the procedure here does not work.
    • To DISABLE a function: repeatedly press the MODE or SCROLL button until the function you wish to delete is active on the display. You cannot disable the speedometer function, but some owners are reporting that has happened and the speedometer reads "0" or does not display. See above (ENABLE a function) for more information.
    • Press and hold the MODE or SCROLL button.
    • Continue holding the button approximately 7 seconds until "WS" appears in the display.
    • While still holding the button, flash the high-beam five times (using either the flash button or the high/low beam selector switch). It helps if, at the same time, you pat your head, rub your tummy, and recite the magic word, "Piaggio", several times. A moment after you complete this step the "WS" indicator will blink off, then on again.
    • Release MODE/SCROLL button. After a few seconds the display will reset.
    • The desired change (enable or disable) should now be accomplished. You can verify by scrolling through the functions.

Service Interval Indicators (Oil Can & Wrench)
    - and-
Unit of Measurement (Mph or km/h)
The following procedure can be used to:
    • Change between Mph and km/h
    • Reset (clear) the Oil Can/Wrench icons
    • Change the interval when the Oil Can/Wrench icons appear, or disable them
    • Change the Wrench icon to appear based on either hours or distance.

    SERVICE SETUP MODE:
I am calling this the "Service Setup Mode" for lack of a term, since this is where the service interval icon settings are configured.
    • With the engine and display off, press and hold the SCROLL button, then while continuing to hold the button, turn the key on.
    • After 7 seconds, "WS" appears in the lower right corner of the display.
    • Release the SCROLL button.
    • The display shows "End". This is the Service Setup Mode.

    Service Setup Menu
In the Service Setup Mode, you can use the SCROLL button to rotate through FOUR menu choices as below:
    • Mph + km/h - Select Unit of Measurement
    • Oil Can icon - Reset/Adjust Oil Service Interval
    • Wrench icon - Reset/Adjust Engine Service Interval
    • End - End Service Setup Mode

Use SCROLL to select the desired menu item, then:
    • Press and hold SCROLL for 4 seconds to activate the desired item.
    • The display shows dashes: "----"
    • Release SCROLL.

Operation of each Service Setup Menu function follows:

Select Unit of Measurement (Mph or km/h)
    • Upon selecting this item, the display shows the current unit of measurement. Either Mph or km/h appears.
    • Press and release SCROLL to alternate between Mph and km/h (to your heart's content) so that the desired unit of measurement is shown.
    • Press and hold SCROLL for 4 seconds.
    • WS will blink (quickly) in the lower right corner of the display, then the display will go blank.
    • Release SCROLL.
    • The new unit of measurement is set.
    • The display now returns to the Service Setup Menu (see above). You may select another function or End.

Reset/Adjust Oil Service Interval (Oil Can icon)
Upon selecting this item, there are two possibilities. If the Oil Can icon is active, you will have the opportunity to clear it--proceed directly below. If the Oil Can icon is not active, then skip over the next section to "CHANGE OIL SERVICE INTERVAL".
    RESET OIL CAN ICON:

    • The display shows CLEAr and no.
    • Press and release SCROLL to alternate between no and yES.
    • Select yES if you wish to reset the oil can icon.
    • Press and hold SCROLL for 4 seconds.
    • WS appears in the display.
    • Release SCROLL.
    • If you selected no, you will not proceed to the next section; the display will revert to the Service Setup Menu.

    CHANGE OIL SERVICE INTERVAL:

    • The Oil Can icon must not be active, or you must have reset it above in order to get to this point.
    • The display now shows the number of hours between Oil Service icon reminders. The factory setting is 0013. The 2nd digit of the hours value will be blinking and can now be changed. You cannot change the first digit (it is always zero).
    • To change the oil service interval, press the SCROLL button once to increment the blinking digit by one. Make additional presses until the desired number appears.
    • If you do not touch the SCROLL button for 4 seconds, the blinking digit becomes set and the next digit blinks.
    • In addition, the display also shows the Oil Can icon above the word OIL, and CLK. The presence of CLK indicates the oil service interval is based on time (hours).
    • After the blinking digit as moved through all digits, the new value (if changed) becomes set.
    • The display now returns to the Service Setup Menu (see above) and the Oil Can icon is again shown. You may select another function or End.

Reset/Adjust Engine Service Interval (Wrench icon)
Upon selecting this item, there are two possibilities. If the Wrench icon is active, you will have the opportunity to clear it--proceed directly below. If the Wrench icon is not active, then skip over the next section to "CHANGE ENGINE SERVICE INTERVAL".
    RESET WRENCH ICON:

    • The display shows CLEAr and no.
    • Press and release SCROLL to alternate between no and yES.
    • Select yES if you wish to reset the wrench icon.
    • Press and hold SCROLL for 4 seconds.
    • WS appears in the display.
    • Release SCROLL.
    • If you selected no, you will not proceed to the next section; the display will revert to the Service Setup Menu.

    CHANGE ENGINE SERVICE INTERVAL:

    • To get to this point, the Wrench icon must not be active or you just now reset it, as above.
    • The display now shows either CLK or km/h (or Mph).
    • The display now shows the number of hours between Wrench icon reminders. The factory setting is "0044".
    • The 2nd digit of the hours value will be blinking:
    • In addition, the display also shows the Oil Can icon above the word "OIL", and the "CLK" indicator is present. The presence of "CLK" indicates the interval occurs based on time (this can be altered for the Wrench icon, but not for the Oil Can icon).

    Programming Various Features
The following settings can be changed at the cockpit and/or adjusted:
    • Setting between Supermoto and Enduro (different wheel sizes)

    Entering Display Programming Mode
Entering the Programming Mode is required for any of the operations discussed below.
    • Depress the MODE or SCROLL button and, while depressed, turn the ignition key to the on position. Continue to hold the button.
    • After approximately 7 seconds, "WS" appears in the display.
    • Continue to hold the MODE or SCROLL button without releasing and flash the headlight high beam FIVE times (5x). At this point, the button may be released.
    • The display should flash a code (either "0001" for Supermoto, or "0002" for Enduro).

    Choosing between "Supermoto" or "Enduro"
It is unlikely that this value should be changed, and I don't know exactly what it does.
    • Enter Programming Mode (see above)
    • When either "0001" (Supermoto) or "0002" (Enduro) is displayed, press and release the MODE or SCROLL button to alternate between the two values.
    • After the correct value is displayed, press and HOLD the button for approximately FIVE seconds until "WS" blinks to confirm the selection.
    • Release the button.
    • "cu" now appears.
    • Don't touch anything, and after a few moments the display will reset.
    • Turn off the ignition key switch

The following settings can be examined but should not be changed by further pressing the SCROLL button to continue further:
    • "ln" (wheel size)
    • "di" (wheel diameter)
    • "speed HALL" (wheel Hall sensor impulse)
    • "rpm HALL" (rpm Hall sensor impulse)
    • "rpm max" (switching lightning)
    • Selecting between miles (Mph) and Km/h
