I thought I would just start a string of posts of what we kill...My bike would not start monday night. I charged the battery, tried again, 12.5 volts still no start. Took it back to the dealer, bad starter. So each time I get it back from the dealer I go twice as far, so I am hopping for two rides this weekend.

:WTF: :WTF: :WTF:

If the starter fails again, look for a malfunctioning compression release.

Dont mean to jump in over your suggestion Amauri, but I would have the cranking compression figures checked when the new starter is fitted. It is usually the decompressor that is causing the starter prob's we have encountered so far.

Thanks Dave
Where do I find the decompressor and how do I see that it's not functioning?

The decompressor or compression release is an automatic device that works off of the exhaust camshaft on each cylinder.
It is a spring-loaded lever that holds the exhaust valve open until a certain RPM when centrifugal force takes over forcing the lever back to the running position.

As FORZA suggested, remove the plugs and take a compression reading from each cylinder.
If the compression is high while cranking with the starter, then the compression release device is not working.

To repair it, you have to drop the motor.

Something else to consider about the starter...

To save weight, it is just big enough to spin the motor.
If you crank for long periods of time the starter will overheat and possibly fail.
Avoid cranking for more than five seconds at a time, if you have to, give it some time to cool between cranking.
Aprilia has posted a Tech Bulletin about this.

Have also heard they do not like being started in gear whilst holding the clutch in ????

Rear cyl. is definately motor out. The front can be done in the frame but its tight to squeeze the oil tank out & rocker cover off.

The starter is apparently the same as a WR450. I need to verify this though.

I should have it back on Friday. Aprilia is covering the part, but I had to cover next day air to get the part here and not wait 7-10 more days for my second ride. I

We have tested everything, it is the starter.

i asked that because the fuse of my bike broke out after i retired my bike.

it was surely already broken before i picked my bike new in my opinion.

it was a stupid thing that made me mad 2 days!! :P

UPDATE:

It was not the starter, something else is wrong with that bike. Jason at Moto Italiano stepped up to the plate BIG TIME and traded me for another 550 they had since in the 3 weeks I owned it I was able to log 57 miles, the rest of the time it was in the shop or on the back of my truck. I put 200+ miles on the bike this weekend and had a blast.

Hi Tony! Man that is great news. Glad to hear that Jason had the Nads to do the right thing!
