What's all involved in this service? I have been riding for a long time now and I can't remember the last time I haven't done my 600 mile service myself. Now I'm new to aprilia and the dealership tells me that they adjust the throttle bodies and tps, is this true?

Mine is in for service Tuesday morning, I'll check with them and update.

As far as I know ( or what the dealer says ) is it's oil and filter and about 3-4 hours spanner working checking stuff ( valves and schims ).

I am going to tell my dealer to update the ecu firmware to 266532 as he says they only do it if the bike is running crap. It isn't, but enough threads here have told me how much it should be done. I know it will make night/day difference with new cans as well, but can't afford them at the mo.

Got her back, £240 later.

Oil (Motul 5100) and filter change. Four hours labour for valve clearance check, schim check, fork seals etc etc, clean and lube chain etc etc. Not a great deal of work really.

They would not update my ecu firmware to 266532 as the bike is running fine. Trouble is after reading threads on here I seemed to know more about it than they did. They said you only needed to do if for map2 for after market cans, but I told them it improved map1 for stock too. They looked confused :WTF:

Anyway. The upshot is that the bike is as it was except that I have a lot more revs to use.

I can't believe how quick this thing is now you have the whole rev range to use. Another reason for her feeling like a rocket machine is that I had a really old Kawasaki Er-5 courtesy bike while she was being serviced. :pissed:

I was in Bikewise Abingdon at the weekend.
They seemd clued up to the new software and maps for the cans.
They said they had had 4 people in to have the new software as they complained of the power being 'fluffy' at the lower end. They claimed it hat left the customers satisfied.

Looks again like all dealers not equal. I cant see why your dealer cant do this for you?
Unlike your dealer, they want £300 for this service!!.

Tell me about it m8.

I assume that they think that they know more about it than us because we don't walk round in Aprilia overalls.

As stated by many people, a lot of us spend hours and hours reading about other riders experiences so we know how our babys work. I am not a mechanic, and would never claim to be, but when many other people have a situation resolved by a dealer fix why not do what you ask anyway.

It is my bike after all.

I might speak to another dealer recommended by cds10 in Worcester. They have won a lot of after sales service from the dealer I bought from. :whiner:

Had my 600 mile service recently and asked the dealer to upgrade the firmware at the same time which he did...(bike is totally standard BTW). After I collected it I could feel a difference on the ride home, but to my mind it felt worse with a partricularly noticable lurch at 2500 RPM on a neutral or trailing throttle. Went straight back and asked if something could have gone wrong with the download, but the dealer said very unlikely and connected the AXONE to show me the new firmware code, etc. Anyway, after some discussion he loaded MAP2 and off I went again for another ride...

And the result....?? An instant improvement, much nicer and noticably smoother low down, so that's how we left it - latest firmware, MAP2 and stock exhausts.

Seems strange that there appear to be differences between bikes with essentially the same set-up?? But maybe there are other factors at play which contribute to the variations, like TB balance for example - who knows? I'm not convinced that in my case the dealer has a full understanding of these bikes, or the AXONE....I would really like to find somewhere local that understands them and how to set them up to best effect. Only place in the SE (UK) that gets consistent praise is Southern Cross. Maybe I'll have to pay them a visit......

The other thing that really ****** me off at the service was the chain.

I took the bike in gleaming with a freshly cleaned chain that I lubed with Motul chain wax. Looking at the chain is part of the service but I have no idea what they lube it with.

Whatever they did lube it with was over most of the bike by the time I rode home. Hence I spent nearly two hours cleaning her last night with gunk and wd40 to get if off, and now I have got no knuckles left.

The Motul wax in a can I use don't budge if you leave if on for a bit before riding. I think some dealers just don't give a shit :pissed:

my guys at GP Motors, San Diego, did a fine job. they did the TB, fuel mixtures, new map, etc. With the new race cans it will backfire to a degree due to rich fuel conditions.

BTW - always negoitate free 600 mile service in the price of the bike.
