Hi Guys

After spending some time off two wheels, I am loving my time on my brand new Tuono.
When I took delivery the owners handbook was missing, a warranty claim has been started by the dealer, so it should be here soon.
My question is, is what is the range you guys are getting from a full tank of fuel. My warning light comes on after approx 110 miles of average riding, but when I fill her up I only get about 11 litres of fuel in. I know the brochures say the tank is 18 litres with 4 litres reserve. If this is the case, why does the warning light come on so early ? I should be able to get quite a bit of mileage out of 7 litres.
Just don't want to run out of fuel somewhere !! :)

Italian electrics - just another little 'quirk'. Mine does the same, comes on at just under half a tank. I haven't run out but going on that, I would expect around the high 200k's (170 miles). I've done 250 and it still only took about 15litres. The really great thing though (you might already know this of course), but if you've got your odometer set to show milage (not trip 1 or 2), it actually changes to zero and starts counting, so you know exactly how many miles you've gone since your fuel light came on. It's a great feature to have on a bike!

Thanks mate.

You have confirmed what I was thinking. Based on 11 litres at fill up, I am getting roughly ten miles per litre, so I thought about 170-180 miles per tank is about right. Pretty good, although I am still breaking it in and I expect it to have a healthier thirst once I can rev it more.
I only tend to use "mode" so I know what you mean about the fuel mileage count. Simple but excellent idea.
My dealer isn't being overly helpful so I wonder what they will have to say about the firmware update to improve the flat spot when I take it in for service in a week or so ?!?!?!?!?!?!? :bangwall:

Cheers

Probably nothing, pity we don't have a Clarkie or Amauri in our respective countries! What amazes me is that the service dealers aren't even interested in learning about any of this. If I was servicing Aprilias in my area, I'd be on this forum every night (like Amauri and Clarkie seem to be) but I don't hear any others out there. Two out of how many thousands across the world! Interesting isn't it. I've had jap bikes and been on other forums and there are heaps of mecahnics and service dealers talking on them all the time. Interesting hey, and they're probably missing a big market because people that buy Aprilia's (at least out here) tend to be a bit more cashed up & happy to spend the bucks. I'd just love to be able to talk sense about my bike to a service dealer that knows more than I do! - and I know fark all!

I have found it is quite common for the buyer/enduser of motorcycles to know way more about operation, accessory availability, stats, reviews, performance, etc., than the salesperson at the dealership. When you are putting down $13,000 plus dollars, I do my homework and research things to death before I pull the trigger. Most salespersons (most are 24 years old) don't even ride a bike close to the caliber of the Aprilia, so they are not as enthusiastic as we are. Forums are sometimes an embarrasment to dealers because we know things before they do. All this was said with all due respect to salespeople and dealers, BTW.

I've found a good mechanic at North Valley in Phoenix, AZ. They are going to update my ICU Tuesday (I'm thinking for free).

He is a bit skeptical of internet chatter, but I think we hit the nail on the head about aprilia owners.

When I gave him a reference to the dealer in WA with address and phone number, he was a little more open to my request.

Dave,
I did a couple test with my '07 last week. I run the tank till the light came on. Then I drained as much as I could get out into a 2 US-gal can. Almost filled it.
Then I added the gas, measuring by two cups at a time. The light went off at 1.5 gal.
One thing I didn't take into account is the speed of response of the sensor. I notice when I fill up at the pump, the light takes a while to go out. Sometimes I make it out of the forecourt before it extinguishes.

The owners manual give almost 1/3rd gallon variance for the reserve light to come on. One of these days I'm going to fill a small container (to get me to a station) and ride around town till I run out of gas so I know how far I can go on reserve. I usually keep track of the MPG to know how many miles I can go on what I have left.

The Honda ST1300 has a similar function that counts miles from when the reserve comes on, but instead of counting up, it counts down. The ST1300 also gives MPG every 15 seconds. I like that!

Popped in to the dealer yesterday to ask about fuel and my lack of handbook still. Still no handbook, and they looked on the web for the fuel capacity. Not very confidence inspiring !! :WTF:

They told me that 40mpg is realistic, so I thought what the hell, and pushed my luck. Rode her up to 155 miles, 40 miles with the fuel light on. Filled her up and got 16 litres in. Therefore, I still reckon that 170-180 mile range is the absolute maximum for combined town and country riding.

Like you, I went about 2 minutes from the petrol station after filling up before the bike noticed she had fuel and turned the light off.

Interesting point from my local dealer was that he has got one matt black Tuono left, and can't get anymore stock. He says that it is one of the fastest selling bikes that they have ever had.

I think we all know why :)

Just to make you American guys smile. Fuel is now nearly £1 a litre in the UK, which I suppose works out to about 75cents a litre or $3 a gallon :bangwall:

They're selling like hotcakes out here too. Went in to local dealer on the weekend and they had none left. Not only that, the sales guy that I deal with said that they'd sold all the Tuono stock over the last month, including the '05s and second hand stock, not one Tuono left in the shop - presumably on the back of the reputation of the '06's. He was happy boy.

When I lived in England (RAF Upper Heyford, OXON) I'm thinking gas was about $3.00 an Imp. Gal., that expensive 12 years ago!

We are up to $3.31 for 91 octaine in AZ. 40 MPG? Maybe to an Imperial Gallon! I get 33 - 35 mixed town/highway riding. Second tank calculated at 40, but haven't been able to do that again.

Sorry Dale

Maths was never my strong point. Unleaded fuel is approx £4.50 a gallon here which is around $8 a gallon. :bangwall:

On a more pleasant note, I went for a ride at the weekend with my mate on his Ducati Monster. We stopped at a cafe that is popular with bikers, and the car park was full of all sorts of new Japanese machinery.

I nearly got mobbed when I got off my bike with people wanting to get a good look at her and ask me about her. :)

Made my day.......everybody seems to love the new Tuono.

Don't sweat the math, that's why I switched from computer science to software. Didn't understand 4x/7y*27+k=a+b.
I took the Tuono out for a ride through the Arizona mountains Sunday. This bike should be illegal on the public roads! I couldn't go too fast! The roads just straightend out in front of me and I felt like I was lollygaging, till I came up on other bikes or cars.

There were lot's of bikes out this weekend, 98% harley's. There were a surprising number of bike broke down on the side of the road, more than usual. No one I ran into knew the difference between a Ducati and a Vespa. A couple people commented, but had to ask 2 or 3 times what kind of bike it was. I guess when you're expecting to hear R1 or GSX-R, Touno catches you off guard.

All in all it was a great aprilia day!

BTW, what part of the country do you live? I keep telling myself I need to take a trip back to the old stomping grounds in the West Midlands. I miss riding my Norton through the country roads!

I live in Walsall, which is about 10 miles from Birmingham.

Walsall is also about 5 miles from Shenstone which is where the Norton factory used to be. Remember when the Norton race bikes were black with JPS cigarette sponsorship and raced by Ron Haslam ?

I saw a few being tested years ago with tape covering them up so people didn't know what they were. You could tell from the sound, they would make your ears bleed.

Bit like Rossi on a V5 Yamaha !!!!

That must have been cool! I rode around B'ham and Coventry a bit while there. I tried to buy a John Player Special several years back. It was at a dealer in Ogden Utah with 6 miles on the clock. I never heard it run either. They wouldn't give it up. Now the dealership is gone. Wonder who lucked out and got that?

I lived near Banbury and Bicester when I was assigned to RAF Upper Heyford. I especially enjoyed heading west to the Cotswolds.

Later!

My reserve light comes on between 95 and 115 miles depending on the fun factor extracted.

Do you notice that your light will stay off for a while each time you shut the bike off and starts counting down over again when the light comes back on?

I rode 11 miles on reserve (came on at 109miles), next morning rode 7.5 miles to work with the light off before it came back on again, rode around town till the trip meter said 145. Not having spare fuel with me, I made a pit stop.

Hi Dale

My fuel light is the same as yours.

Like I said b4, I ran mine to 155 miles the other day and got 16 litres in, so assuming approx 2 litres left before fill up.

Filled her up yesterday after an afternoons entertainment. She had 148 miles on the trip meter but I only got 14 litres in, so assuming 4 litres left.

Funny really as I thought that commuting and hard riding might equate to the same fuel economy, approximately. But she seems to be more frugal when you are batting along at 90.

So it's official, ride fast or not at all. :burnout:

filed up twice yesterday, and both times the reserve came on almost exactly at 75 miles. I then put in about 1.9 US gallons to top it off. Do the math, I don't have fuel capicity in front of me.

The tank took 17 litres to the filler nozzle on the stand. This was with some fast & very twisty roads as well as 240kph + according to the GSXR at one point of our ride.;) :burnout: :)

Yesterday I was testing to see fuel consumption with steady throttle and speeds about 140-170 km/h.I was 2up on a 500km day trip.
The light came on at 225 km.Fill it up and took 13 liters. Not bad at all I think!

Too much conversion math for me!
I did a ride to Tucson from Phoenix last Saturday. I filled up at the bottom of Mt. Lemon then again before leaving Tucson. I calculated 47 MPG during the mountain ride. It's getting better and better!

I am getting about 40 mpg (US), spirited riding, but the it takes only about 2 gallons to fill it from the yellow light. I may have a larger reserve than 1.2 Gallons (US). Basically I am getting about 80 miles fuel range till showing up the yellow light.

same for the RSVR's right, I know sounds like a stupid question right? right. I've done the math a few times and am only getting aprox 35mpg unfortunatly, I didn't look into it and thought the Ape would sip less than my steady 35 city 40 hwy mpg Guzzi, but it holds almost 5 gallons with no fuel light till about 150-175mi depending on riding obviously.

good to know as my fuel light comes on at about 100mi which bugs me I don't like to fuel up THAT often, 150 is much better but I better not push it too far without putting some spare petrol in a camel pack or something

There are threads about the fuel light and fuel consumption that you can search. I ran out of fuel a few weeks back as I pulled up to the bowser, and put 17.6 litres in, to the brim. At 15km/litre, that gives 265 km (165 miles), but I don't count on more than 250km, and I ride more conservatively than most.
Here in NSW Aust, 95 octane fuel is about $A1.35 a litre ($6 per UK gal).
TuonApe is lucky in Queensland, where they pay less fuel tax, and it's about $1.20/l

You should know better than to mention fuel prices on here Caustis, this is where us UK riders get all bent out of shape.

There is a good chance in the next week or so that we will be paying £1/litre which is approx $9USD per gallon :bangwall:

it appears a lot of confusion between US Gallon and Imp/UK Gallon, mpg US, mpg UK, etc.

1 Imp (uk) Gallon = 1.2 US gallon = 4.53 liters= 4.5 liters approx
1 US gallon = 0.83 Imp(Uk) gallon = 3.785 liters = 3.8 liters approx

so,
40 mpg (Imp/UK) = 33.3 mpg (US)

1 lb /liter = 4.5 lb/gal (uk) = 3.8 lb/gal (us) = $7.60 USD/gal ==> holly shit, it is expensive!!!

The Triumph Sprint ST also has that count-down feature. Closest I've run it is 6 miles showing. I'm sure there's some slack built into its system, but I was still getting more and more nervous as the number went down!

I ignore the fuel light and watch my trip meter.

This morning's fill up was very typical....

126.2 miles on the trip meter, 4.117 US gallons in the tank.

126.2/4.117=30.65 mpg (US gallons).

Assuming a 4.7 US gallon tank, my range is 144 miles. I fill it up when I've gone between 115 - 130 miles on a tank.

So far my yellow light has been very reliable using about 2 gallons (US) to fill it up.

The pump nozzle NEVER fills up my tank properly. Therefore, I completely ignore the automatic cutoff from the pump. Getting gas in the Tuono is a complete PITA. When filling up, I check the fuel level and make sure the tank is full.

My yellow light has also been very reliable. It comes on with 1.5 gallons left. I ignore it because I still have 33% of my fuel capacity available when the light comes on.

Light illuminated today at 154 miles. Stopped for gas at 157.4, straddled the bike while filling to the brim (no collapsible bellows on the pump nozzle), and SQUEEZED 3.42 gallons into the tank. Comes out to 46 mpg.
