The name's Charles and I just rode home on a new 2004 Tuono yesterday. Gone is the ZX-12 that I spent the last 2 months on. Why the hell I bought that Kawasaki is beyond me.
The 30 mile ride home from New Haven CT was just a glimpse into the soul of this amazing machine. Not even 100 miles and it has me completely under it's spell. The 05 Speed Triple I had comes no where near matching what this naked bike has to offer.
Anyway, it's good to be here and I'm looking forward to an awesome season.
This bike is the absolute balls of life.

Congrats man. I spent the last 2.5 years on a tricked out Falco and loved it. Still have it. Bought a new 04 Tuono right after thanksgiving, and while I still love my Falco, I am really digging on my Tuono.
Great bike. Aprilia's are very reliable. Rock solid ROTAX motor and gobs of useable torque. You will have a great summer on this bike.
Now come and meet all of us Aprilia boys here for a week of mountain raping in West Virgina in July!

Welcome aboard! Good choice on the bike. Out of curiosity...what does the Tuono do that the Tripple didn't? OR - what didn't you like about the Tripple that you do about the Tuono...or something like that?

Thanks folks, I'll be hanging around and checking out what's up for rides this season.
Beau-
The Speed Triple I had definately came up short in the front brake dept. I tried bleeding, and pad replacement and they still felt weak and without much feel to them. I'm not the only one that has said that also.
Early on in it's life I discovered an oil leak in the engine casing. That pissed me off; if I want an oil leak I'll buy a Harley.
The third thing I found was a light shimmy at higher speeds.....above 115, etc. Maybe it was a wheel balance issue, but it wasn't the most comfortable feeling I've had on a bike.
The Speed Triple was and is a great ride, but I just know it will be eclipsed by the Tuono. And I'm looking forward to it.
Now to wait out this 4 day spell of cold rain, and then get about riding.
if I want an oil leak I'll buy a Harley.
Harley's haven't leaked for about 23 years.

How odd, I just went out today to collect a fresh coating of bugs. :burnout:

Harley's haven't leaked for about 23 years.
Of course they haven't. And 90% of the Harleys sold are still on the road today............the other lucky 10% managed to make it home.

Regardless of any stereotypes, you could have easily made the oil leak joke about the Triumph, welcome aboard. Good crowd here who are pretty fanatical about what ever bikes they fancy. Whether they own them or not.
I suggest we move on.

I rode it home from the dealer on Friday, and Saturday started a 4 day cold monsoon rain. I'd normally be frustrated as hell, but I know my bike and I have a nice long season ahead of us. And it's going to be a good one.

Did you get the red one or the silver one. I bought an 04 from Dave & Jody last year, most fun I ever had on two wheels. Welcome to the group.

Thanks.
I got the red one. And Dave & Jody are great to deal with, I'm very pleased with the way they treated me. Jody rides a Falco, and takes trips to places like Nova Scotia, a serious and real rider.
I only managed 64 miles before these monsoons hit, but I am in love big-time. I've never owned an Italian bike before, and I'm digging the hell out of it.
Do you ever make it to "Mucus Dairy" on the odd Sunday?:)

Welcome to the dark side. I'm usually at the Dairy most sundays. I have a Red 03 with a Akro. Hit me up if you want to go riding on sundays. I usually meet up some friends off of 22 in White Plains. We start early to avoid the Sunday morning drivers

So you sprung for the Tuono eh?
So far I got 12,xxx miles on mine and have not had a problem, several Mille owners here with 50,000+ with few or no problems, either. They are screwed together alright, aside from occasional electrical gremlins.
(I'm john over on labs, btw)

Congrats on the Tuono! I'm a new Tuono rider too and I'm loving it. I'm having more fun on this bike than any other I've owned(FZ1, CBR600rr, V-rod).
Speaking of Harleys, if you believe they haven't leaked for 23 years then I have a bridge to sell you...
My pops has owned 4 harleys and all but the most recent have leaked. The new one might even leak but I'm not positive about that. All new bikes, 98 and newer. First was a 98 sportster, then a Heritage(that one leaked the most) then a 98 electraglide and now an '04 electraglide. Fortunately he hasn't had trouble with the new one. But the 98 electraglide had many many problems. Starter crapped out a few times, throttle cable broke when he was on a road trip...I know there are a bunch I'm forgetting too.
That's one reason I picked Aprilia over Ducati or Triumph, I wanted something cool but still reliable. I read nothing but good things about the reliability of the Rotax engines and Aprilia in general.

It's encouraging to hear about the quality and reliability of these Aprilias. In all my years, I have never owned a bike that has captivated me like this one.
And I thank my stars that someone had the guts to make a naked sportbike without a neutered motor. If you are going to make a streetfighter then by God you'd better bring all your muscle to the table or you are dead meat.
I truly love this bike, and I often stand in quiet vigil in the doorway of it's room, shedding a brief tear of admiration for the one who has moved me so.

Depends on where it's not leaking. It might be empty.

You guys are making me chuckle....
I did another quick 60 miles last night, and boy am I in love. It seems twice as stiff and well suspended as my previous Speed Triple. The motor wants to be uncorked, I can feel it. And it hints that alot of fun awaits me.
The brakes are some of the best I've ever used.
Telling you things you already know, right? :)

During my ride last night I was mentally comparing the 2 bikes. The Tuono's suspension and frame feels worlds better than the 2005 S3. You can feel the tightness and rigidity. The S3 felt tight too, but the Tuono is definately a big cut above.
Front brakes are no comparison. Aprilia wins hands down. The Brembo brakes are so sure and strong. The S3's brakes felt soft, with alot more lever pull. I expected alot more from Triumph since they were a new radial design.
The Triple's engine was a hoot, but I think this one will be better. I've haven't given it full stick yet as it's only done it's second temperature cycle, and I have yet to remove the restrictions. But I can feel the animal in there waiting to be set free.
Wheelies on the S3 were a cinch in first, just dial it up at 3000 with about 1/2 twist of throttle. Second required the on-off-on method or a whiff of clutch. But from what I gather the Tuono just rears it's nose in second right off the gas with no bullshitting around..........the way it should be.
I'll try to post more comparison thoughts as they come to me.
Have you seen my shotguns yet? :)

Hey the front is super stiff. In order to get the sag set for me I had to back off alot of preload. The rear spring is too soft dial up the preload. Also a big help is to drop the front down to the fourth line. It steers real quick especially if you have 190/50. That tire sucks the bike tends to fall in on turns.
Too funny!:funnypost But dude, he has a gun!
No he hasn't. He's just pleased to see me.

Ok, thanks for the comparison...I'm digging the s3's looks but I'm thinking that the tuono is the better bike in the long term.
