I spent a couple of days riding around the Yreka area last week and am looking for a reason to go back. I've been in the area before, but this time we went just to ride around and see what's out there. If you ever get a chance to pass up the I-5 drone, take Highway 3 and 36 between Yreka and Red Bluff. This is 200 miles of beautiful roads, no traffic and great scenery. Highway 3 goes over a couple of mountain passes (2 lane, great pavement, endless left/right combinations) and 36 is a roller coaster ride with the same kind of turns. Don't miss these if you are ever in the area. If you are heading for the ocean, take 96 from I-5 toward Willow Creek then down to Arcata, bypassing 299 that runs the same route 100 miles south. No traffic here along the Klamath River through Happy Camp, with great pavement. If you are looking for adventure, take the Salmon River Rd off 96 toward Cecilville. This is the most dangerous paved road I've ever been on. A paved wagon trail from the 1880's, it's a slow 1 lane along a spectacular river gorge. Be careful-looking past your right footpeg into the river 500' down, with your left bar end touching the bank is exciting. Not a Mille road, but the Tuono works fine. Try these and enjoy. They're worth the trip.
