View Full Version : Sept. 24 (Saturday) Angeles Crest ride in SoCal

How's Saturday morning at 830am at the Angeles Crest Highway Shell gas station? It's right off the 210 Freeway and Angeles Crest Highway. The gas station is 1/2 block south of the exit.

Angeles on Saturday is a great ride. Not much traffic and a good group of Aprilias up there at Newcombe's.

All you folks who came out last week, please try to come to this one. It's about 26.7 miles one-way up to Newcombe's Ranch from the gas station at the bottom. There are also a few good offshoot roads up there.

Is there anyone else from Orange County making the ride?
Maybe we can meet some place on the 405 and head up?

Let me know :cigar:

 Let's meet at a coffee shop...is there one nearby?

I need Coffee Gas for my body in the AM!

I don't know if there's any coffee shops around there.... The only coffee I get is when I get to the top to Newcombe's Ranch. Their coffee is actually very good. I'll check on the coffee shops though but that area is fairly barren.

at that time, 8am and beyond there are a few shops... if you go right or left at the 76 station. and big ups for newcombs coffee ;) and the gigantic friggen pine cones

The stationary pine cones are fine but it's the ones that come flying at you from the mountainsides that worry me. That, and the squirrels that run out and stand in the middle of the road like the ones in that commercial.

Well... Beau, you want to just pick the first coffee shop to the right of the 76? I have no idea what it is....

sounds like deer or ram trouble to me (come close to both up there), was staulked by a mountain lion, but have not seen a bear... yet :p: Nothing compares to crest in the springtime... all the little bunnys sunning themselves, about 4-5 per corner. it's pure murder.

lawman800

I was talking about the flying pine cones or the flying rocks that ambush you as you turn a corner. They literally come flying off the side of the mountain to hit you in the head or something.

The big juicy bugs are also great. They splatter and then ooze down your helmet and cover 1/2 your viewing port. Then it dries to a nice caulk surface. Then in winter, you get the patches of black ice in the corners and past Newcombe's, you get to test your Dunlop 209s in the snow.... I have not seen bears, but deer, coyote, bunnies, squirrels, lizards, and chippies abound. Angeles is beautiful but dangerous.

So, see you there Saturday morning?

How is the CHP situation up on the 'Crest now? I have been staying away from the Crest for a while. If I can get a "Kitchen Pass" I will be there.

Chippies are not around much on Saturdays. At most you'll see 1 or 2. On Sundays, they are out in force with the Sheriffs and you might see 5 or 6. That's why I like Saturdays. JThomas says there's none on the weekdays.

What's a kitchen pass? I'll settle for a bathroom pass or a hall pass.

Chippy action can be(not always) intense on the weekends, thats why it does NOT pay to sleep in. I am usually on my way down by 8-9... 10 if I stop for breaky. Weekdays are a dream!!!

Actually it looks really sweet up there!

I don't want to meet at the gas station and then get coffee because who knows how long we are going to be at the gas station waiting for others. I'd rather be waiting at a coffee shop....I've never been out there so I really have no idea where you are talking about meeting or what is around there...what's the address of the gas station...maybe I can find a coffee shop nearby...unless somebody has a reccomendation???

lawman800

I like the contrast. 1 has CF hood, 1 CF airdam, 1 all white. Maybe they need to put the CF stuff all on the white car. That would be cool.

Let me know if you need more CF hoods. I manufacture them. (Well, not me personally... my techs do it).

lawman800
09-21-2005, 08:22 PM
I don't have any recommendations. To be honest, in all the years I've been there, I never ventured beyond the gas stations. Anyone out there know of some place around the corner?

There is one in Glendora (a Starbucks)
We could meet there, and then leave from there, if everyone is all gased up PRIOR to meeting at STARBUCKS???

Actually... meeting in Glendora would take most of you more east than you need to go. I think that would take you about 15 minutes past where Angeles is and you have to double back. Let's meet in South Pasadena and we can hop on the 210 which is only about 10 minutes away from Angeles Crest.

There's a Coffee Bean on Fair Oaks, 400 block, right off the 110 Freeway north. Get off on the 110 Freeway North on Fair Oaks. Make a left and it's on your right side in a plaza with Winchell's for those who prefer coffee under $6. I like churros myself in the morning. From there, we go up about 3 miles, make a left on California, and hop on the 210 for 10 minutes and we are there!

How's that sound to everyone?

sidewaysammy
09-21-2005, 11:26 PM
Coffee Bean it is.
If anyone is up for earlier.....that works for me also.
Say meet at the Coffee Bean at 7:45???
That way we can be ON THE ROAD at 8:30
:blah:

But hey....LAWMAN, its your deal....so you are the ring leader....

Just post the time....and I am there..... :cathat:

Hahaha... It looks like Beau doesn't know. :spankie:

My car, the red '92 is back halfed in lexan an runs a fully adjustable(comp, reb, ride hight, preload, dual rate) suspension, heim joints all over. she weights in at close to 2k lbs and makes 200whp from 1.7L's (well over 100hp per liter)... 12" Four piston brakes... see whos laughing ;)

And by the way, the hood is a peace of shit... perhaps yours are better lawman? But this one does weight in at 15lbs or so

lawman800
09-22-2005, 12:35 AM
You know... I gotta get my hoods weighed. That is a common question. I have one of my own hoods on my Boxster and assorted CF bits on my track bike come from my factory so you know that at least I put my mouth where my manufacturing money is, or vice versa.... something like that....

South Pasadena is very nice and quiet in the morning. I just hope the Coffee Bean is open that early. I think about 8am is the latest to meet there then, according to Sideways. So it has been declared and it therefore shall be done!

TIME: 0800 hours

From there, we head to the 210W and Angeles Crest! Wear your full suits and chatterboxes!

Oh, one last thing, within a 5 block radius of that Coffee Bean are at least 4 gas stations so everyone can pick their fave to gas up at before we leave. Angeles Crest from the bottom to Newcombe's Ranch is 26 miles each way so calculate your mileage accordingly.

wow that coffee bean is way outta the way hehe.. well from my direction it is.

There's a starbucks pretty close to the gas station everyone meets at. Coffee is off the highway where the 2 and 210 meet. Yes it's open early enough :)

http://www.starbucks.com/retail/locator/MapResults.aspx?a=1&StoreKey=7827&IC_O=34.1462500950094%3a-118.248032496439%3a32%3aGlendale%2c+California%2c+ United+States&GAD1_O=&GAD2_O=&GAD3_O=Glendale%2c+California%2c+United+States&GAD4_O=&radius=5&countryID=244&dataSource=MapPoint.NA

(sorry, I don't know how to make a link to a nice short "Starbucks Location")

so is it coffee first then meet at the gas station at bottom of the hill at 8:30?

Nijinsky3
09-22-2005, 10:08 AM
Cool thanks.

FYI..I went up there yesterday and it was EMPTY! No cops, only passed 3 cars on the way up, nothing coming down the hill) We left the Shell about 7 or 7:15 and the local commuter traffic was off the mountain and the road was almost completely barren.

On another note...last time I went on a weekend morning, there were cops everywhere. They never seem to bother me (stock bike and I am too cautious to go fast enough in turns to actually speed! lol) but the motorcycle cop was pulling over every aftermarket pipe or not stock positioned license plate he could find. The ones in cars seemed to just be after speeders. Keep an eye out for the polar bear! (CHP in the white Camaro with the tieeny tiny light bar you hardly notice)

Anyhow, whoever said earlier is much better....I TOTALY AGREE WITH YOU!

We usually leave the Shell by 7 or so.....once 8 rolls around, the hill is paked with cops and tourists...

jtomas
09-22-2005, 10:15 AM
white camaro? geez... next they'll be on prillers! (at least if they have any style)

Are they crackin down on aftermarket pipes now? It's not my fault the canyons' echos make my bird go rr.rrrrRRR.RRAAAAaaWWwWWrrrRRRR!!!!

As I read backwards I think there is a little confusion on the meeting place...are we going to do starbucks or coffee bean??

lawman800
09-22-2005, 02:50 PM
K... I am confused as well. I don't have a preference one way or another where to meet as long as we ride. How's everyone coffee up where they like and be at the Shell at the bottom ready to go by 0830am? Or earlier? Saturdays are generally okay.

I heard about the aftermarket pipes being cracked down upon only with the West Hollywood Sheriffs and Huntington Beach PD on their bike nights.

Have a great ride guys. I'd love to go but I have too much going on this weekend.

BTW the Crest is full of cops on weekends, even Saturday. Officer Stout will be more than glad to meet your acquaintance. My two cents worth - take the back way instead, Mt. Emma Road and get your breakfast at Mile High Cafe. :)

Going up ACH via the front way is NOT SMART unless you need more tickets. You guys should take Arnel's advice and go up the back side. Meet at the 15 and 138 at 8:00. I won't be able to make it because I need to go dirt bike riding this weekend. Ride safe and look out for the man.

Granted it's been 2 months since I've ridden the crest but... why do you think it's a guaranteed ticket to ride the normal route? Have things changed in the past 2 months that cops are pulling over every modded bike even if they aren't speeding? - or do you just rip the canyons up so you naturally attract that attention?

Marko

The last two times I was up no cops, that was a couple of weeks ago. If you go up the front side or do 9 mile DO the speed limit. I am coming up the back. See you guys at Nukems! You should realy try and kick that caffine habbit.

The back way from 15/138 is still closed as far as I know.....anyone been up there in the last month? The roads were supposed to be partially damaged and they weren't going to repair them until next year sometime.

Anyone know further details on that? I know it was closed at the rest area on the left (about 15 miles or so after Newcomb's....

lawman800

I've been going up on Saturday for the last month or so and I have seen maybe 2 cops at the most and that's after 9am or 10am. On the way up and down, I ride at the limit or not much above when I punch out of turns. Other than that, it's a very nice quiet ride on Saturday. Best of all, not many soccer moms and trucks up there on Saturday!

Beau1K

I'm not trying to be super speed racer guy either. I just got my bike. I've never been to the spot we are going. It's more touring than tearin it up for me right now.

So...sounds like we all are meeting at

lawman800

Just finished unloading everything from the Trackday today at the California Speedway. So tired, but I'll still be there tomorrow!

The route is as follows:

400 S. Fair Oaks Avenue
North on Fair Oaks Avenue
Left (west) on California Avenue
Right in 2 blocks on ? (I don't know the name but it parallels the 210)
210 to Angeles Crest Highway
Left on Angeles Crest Highway
Shell on the left side (2 blocks south of the freeway exit)

Don't hold me to that, this is from the top of my head after a whole day at the track but it gets me there.
