I've had my RS50 for 2 years now. I use it for commuting and just for backroad fun. I'd not suggest it to anyone in the States as a first bike though, you'll probably burn out on it pretty quick. Seems that most people appreciate the RS more as a second bike or after they've had a few bigger bikes.

As for a good starter bike check out the Kawasaki 250 or 500 Ninja. They don't look as good as a RS but are a dime a dozen and cheap to fix if you break anything (and they can go on the freeway, something the RS can't do). And most of the time you can sell it for what you paid as long as it's in good shape. I've still got one in my garage I use for teaching friends to ride. But, go take a ride on a RS before you make your decision. Too few people don't even give it a chance.

If your looking for a "Motorcycle" then I dont think this is the bike for you. It's way under powered. It's also a 2 stroke and that is very different than most the bikes out there. Maybe start with a 500 or somthing.
Just my 2 cents
