Who do most of you use for insurance in Aus. I am currently looking around as RACV are trying to commit day light robbery.

Insurance premiums are based on a number of factors, mostly related to the underwriters' assessment of risk. In the case of bikes this is obviously very high. My insurer (New England Insurance Brokers in Stanthorpe Qld - the best value I could find and worth an inquiry) reckons 1 in 8 policies result in a write-off!!
The older you get with a clean driving record, the cheaper bike insurance gets, with rates getting to an affordable level for those over 40.
If you're under 40, or even worse, under 26, then you're stuffed insurance-wise.
You're also stuffed if you actually make a claim, as I'm soon to discover after my recent step-off and 15K+ claim. :(
In other words, there's really not much good news wrt bike insurance. You just have to grin and bare it.
FWIW.

I am over 40 and still think it is a bit steep. AAMI won't even insure the Aprilias. Even being a rating one with the highest no claim.
since I had 2 incidents..
1. I dropped it a 40kmh (9.5K)
2. foot path melted and it fell ( 4.5K)
the insurance is scary.

Could'nt agree with you more. All depends on how well you sleep at night.
My cover cost $1,120 (with max no claim etc and clean claims history) to cover $30K on my 04 Factory. This is a discounted rate based on low (twice weekly) usage. Crazy waste of money till you drop the thing.
Get a quote from NEIB - much better value than QBE who were my previous insurer.

ulysses club get the best discounts, $66- for 3 years membership.
try ringing again & ask for the ulysses discount to see if it's worth joining.
I'm with "NRMA Vintage" 1800 646 605, we're cheaper than Arista & NEIB ;)

Bend over and prepared to be shafted, is all m/cycle insurance is about!
3rd party property is all I've ever had on any bike I've owned. If you deck it, you fix it, no matter what! But at least if you hit a Porsche, Merc or other very expensive car, and it's deemed your fault, at least the insurance will fix their damage!
(I jacknifed a trailer with my Ducati 851 in it many years ago, so I know the pain and suffering an owner goes through. It cost me $5K to fix). I'm surprised it actually was as little as that. Took 2 months to get it back on the road, and it was a bit of a mess).
Anyways good luck with your quotes.
I use Arista and found them very good - but you have to be over 40.
RinOz I'll check the vintage insurance out ... how old do you have to be for that! :D
Leigh you're just a wild man!

I ran a thread on this a while ago, same type of replies as above really. I ended up going with Shannons. Arista to expensive,New england only if you have got insurance with them ie. a car, and had a bike policy with them previously, AAMI dont go there, RACQ >$$$. If you are in QLD, try suncorp metway, you have to be a resident in QLD for them to actually even give you a quote. NRMA hate bikers and swan, forget about it.

Like Fox, I'm with Arista. Price was the lowest I could find, but still steep at about $550 for an agreed value (of $15K) - but you do need to be part of the 'old fart brigade' (over 40). So Phantom you should be ok.
I think the key is what happens if you do need to claim - unknown with Arista so far as (touch-wood), none yet on the bike. Had a big claim saga with my better-half's car - third party at fault, but piss-poor performance from our (then) insurance company, so we dropped them fast.

I was insured with Arista when I had to drop my Hayabusa, yes had to drop because the idiot in the left hand lane of a 3 lane road decide he wanted to turn right .. and proceeded to do so right in front of me into the right hand lane - the only thing I could do was to throw the bike down.
Luckily I had witnesses but amazingly the bastard decided to dispute it and actually drew a map saying he was going west and I was coming the other way and was in the wrong. This was a bad strategy for him as it was a one way street which meant he would have been going in the wrong direction. :D
Anyhow they paid up quicky and the bike was fixed quickly.

nrma quoted about $100 less than arista on 20k agreed value on my 01 r . Biggest drawback with nrma is restricted km`s (8000/ yr if I remember) Bear in mind this insurance is meant for older machinery, therefore km restriction. Pity the old farts membership arrived the day after I troweled my bike. $3k and counting. Cheers , Ross.

I've been with QBE for few years now and although not the absolute cheepest, I've had 2 write offs in 2 years and their service is absolutley second to none in my experience. Neither accidents were my fault, but none the less I've heard horror stories with people trying to get claims with other companies. So I'm happy to pay the extra $70 over the cheapest just cause I trust their service - which is a big wrap for an insurance company. However, a mate recently got a new gixxer 1000 and surprisingly Suncorp was the cheapest. On further enquiries with a broker, it seems they're trying to get back into the bike market, so they're doing cheap rates - at the moment anyway.
