I just finished my novice racing season at wmrra. I raced expert classes the second half of the season on my SV650 and '00 RSV Mille.
(best finishes on the mille is a 3rd at the Margurita 48 Endurance and 6th Open GP Twins)

The mille is essentially a street bike with race plastic.
Here is what is already done (or parts that I have:
-de-regulated
-eprom (aprilia)
-voltage amplifier
-fuel pressure regulator (on my shelf)
-air box (on my shelf)
-K&N air filter
-OZ wheels (brembo spares)
-titanium slip on (aprilia)
-520 chain conversion (17-46 and 45) gearing
-
I will send the showa front and ohlins rear to Dave at GP as soon as I can find an ohlins rear used at a reasonable price.

I have a complete spare motor (sucked valve)
spare set of "good" stock heads

What is the obviuous stuff I'm missing?

Any help will be appreciated. Ther are some fast duc's and hondas out there and I need all the help I can get.

The class champ on a 999S will not be racing Twins classes next year. (Ross Delong)

Since Jet City hasn't been back I'm the only aprilia racing in Washington (except Brent "Moto-Bits" Prindle brought his aprilia out once in Spokane WA after I continuouisly threw down the gauntlet)

Any input will be appreciated.

Get the race air box off of the shelf and on the bike. Air volume is critical for that engine.

Get that suspension done.

Make sure you clean the air filter at regular intervals.

Get your standard race spares. Bars, etc. If you can find a pair of radiators or an oil tank on ebay, get them.

Look into running VP Ultimate 4 if you can find some.

You didnt mention tire warmers.. get some.

If you like grip tape on the sides of the tank- check out stompdesign.com

Develop a race resume and start aiming for sponsors. No warmers? Try chickenhawk. General gear? Lockhart Phillips.

I have found that a good set of leathers can make a difference in the riders mobility (and safety) so dont go racing with a 6 year old suit that you found on ebay for $250.

Good rearsets will help your feet stay planted and offer a different position when you start scraping toe/peg.

You should be able to do very well with a 2000 Mille in a twins class. Just get it set up properly and go race it.

Thanks for all the advice,

TIRE WARMERS!!!
I don't have any. (YET) I intend to purchase those first!
I had been trying to scrub in heat as much as possible during the warm up lap and then just going about 80% the first lap. The last event I just went for broke and charged T1 from the start and it made a HUGE difference in my finishing position.

I have good SYED leathers (multiple crash tested and approved)

TCM rearsets GP shift (street bike also)

How would you reccomend I set up a resume? I have only my novice year for race exposure. Any ideas?

Anything you think of please let me know. I want to get ready for next year and be competitive.

DON DAHL where are you?

Thanks again.

Just be honest with your resume and let them know this will be your first year of seriously racing and itemize your accomplishments so far. Just be strong it what your GOALS are, and let them know what areas you will be riding in to give them an idea of exposure area.

Both of those companies are good about including just about anyone who is willing to race. Try to land one with a local Aprilia dealer to recieve a "racer discount" on OEM parts in case you need it. It never hurts to ask. Once you get a feel for the resume thing send it to some local guys. You would be amazed who will help. Local paint shops for your bodywork, etc.

Contact Aaron Lephart at Lockhart Phillips and David Podolsky at chickenhawk. But do ME a favor and tell them Aaron Grigsby sent you, that way they know I am passing the good word along.

XT Racing also has programs for lap timers, and Motul for oil products. Let your imagination run wild and use the internet to its potential. Just call businesses left and right to see if they accept resumes- I highly recommend calling first before sending a blind application. But do it NOW, as several have a Nov/Dec cutoff.

LP is awesome for chains, sprockets, leathers, shocks, boots, etc. And throughout the year Aaron will run some smoking discount deals.

I'm here bro. You won't be alone out there next season. Let me know if you need a hand with the bike, and/or resume.

My report and plans to follow after this weekend.

Thanks again!!!

I'll do it!!

I appreciate you guys sharing your experience and info.

But, do I have to be honest? Really honest?

"I'm a really untalented rider that is very, very slow and crashes alot.

Your product and logo will be displayed on my bike until I crash.
Then it will be displayed on the track asphalt until the corner workers can clear the debris. Then it will be displayed in the garbage can. Please send several stickers and loads of cash, rebuilding wrecked bikes is expensive.

The the spectators at the tracks are all bike nuts with no disposable income because they spend all their money on their bikes. The other riders are asking me for your contact info and how much sponsership money I got from you.

On sundays I stand at the corner of I-5 and 167 with a cardboard sign reading "will work for tires". I would be happy to display your company logo there."

Or should I dress it up a little?

Really, though thanks.

Put on your leathers and helmet so we can recognize you with a sign that says "Will work for entry fees."

Just don't stand on the SE corner of Hwy 18 and I-5,

That corners mine BEAWTCH! :D

I'm thinking about racing Willow Springs the 3rd weekend in January.

Anyone from the Northwest interested?

I think the cost is $150 (I'll find out) to haul your bike down with room for 3-6 additional bikes in a local race teams 28' trailer. Personal transportation to and from, accomodations, etc are up to you

Any O' ya'll aprilia riders in that neck of the woods?

Was talking with Mike Castro WMRRA #17 (1:28's at Pacific) really fast guy!!! he is thinking about takin a new ZX-10 down for some pre-wmrra workouts. (he has access to the trailer)

Nothin is set in stone just a casual conversation.
