Round 9 of 10 at Oakhill raceway was a big success for AF1. You guys have already heard about the mini endurance results posted by Micah (not such a big success), so I will not cover that.

Sunday the weather had cleared from the rain the previous day. The track was still wet for practice in the morning, mainly on the patches. For those of you that don't know Oakhill, it is most commonly refered to as a goat trail. There are a ton of patches.

Practice was a little slick, but the track dried quickly from the sun, and by my first race (2nd race of the day) the track was dry. My first race was Formula 2 which includes SV650s and Honda RS250's. I am leading points in this class so I got to start from the pole. I actually prefer to start from the front row outside rather than inside because every class I am in starts behind an expert class grided in front of us. When I am on the outside I can avoid the traffic jam that usually occurs on the inside of turn 1, by just motoring around the outside of everyone.

My start in Formula 2 was acceptable but not the best I can do. I carried the front tire about 6" above the ground thru 1st but aquired a bit of a side to side wobble which made my shift to second more difficult. I was 2nd place going into turn 1 behind the SV650 that is 2nd behind me in the points. I spent about a lap going to school on the SV and got him with a good pass on lap 2. I put my head down and put down some good laps, passing lappers and the experts gridded in front of me without getting held up. By the end of the 8 laps I was able to put about a 1/4 lap lead over 2nd to take the win.

My next race of the day was Lightweight Twins (5th race of the day). In this race I was also gridded on pole, and was able to get the hole shot into turn 1. I quickly checked out on 2nd place and rode a good solid race for the win.

After lunch was my most exciting race of the day, D superstock. I once again was gridded on the pole, this time right behind an expert on a RS250. On the start the RS250 in front of me was in neutral (bad situation). I just started letting the clutch out when I saw that he was not moving, so I had to pull back in the clutch and coast around him. The grid was marked on the extreme left of the track so the only way around him was to the right in traffic. This unfortunate start left me back in around 6th place in class. Turn 1 combines 2 short straights and is the fastest turn on the track. Turn 2 is a heavy braking zone from the fastest part of the track into the slowest turn on the track. I was able to get very late on the brakes up the inside to bump up to 3rd in class. The two riders on SV650s in front of me are very strong riders. I worked and worked for a way around the rider in 2nd who was the same guy 2nd in points. The rider in first place is 3rd in points. The battle raged in this race. I got up side by side with 2nd place multiple times but couldn't make anything stick. We were so close that we rode almost half the track side by side. That rider has become a friend during the season so we had quite a few hand signals and stares will running the track side by side, neither one of us wanting to stuff the other. In the end I passed him on the second to last lap. I was able to pull a nice move up the inside for first place 2 turns before the checker flag, pulling out my 3rd win of the day.

My fourth race of the day was CMRA Middleweight which I am up against riders Bill Erzal and Greg LeClair both of AF1. I had an excellent start and by the 3rd lap I was out in front of the heavyweight class which started in front of us. I ran a good consistent race and won the class and the overall. I was excited because it was my first overall win in a sprint race.

Overall it was a good weekend and I took home 4 of 4 first place finishes. My place in first for the season in all of my classes is almost secured. I just have to finish all of my races at the last race of the season and I will have 4 class championships.

My most exciting part of the race was locking up the front tire going into turn 2 from the straight for a nice long slide that cranked the bars all the way to the lock. I figure I should have crashed there...

My GP star moment was passing a few bikes into turn 2 very late on the brakes, rear wheel off the ground from the point I started braking all the way up to the turn in, around 105mph down to 30 or so. The rear settled just in time for me to flick it in. Definitely couldn't have done it if I tried, and never hit turn 2 as fast or as well as that one time. Definitely amped me up for the rest of the races.

Round 10 of 10 is next weekend at Motorsports Ranch in Cresson Texas. Hopefully it will go just as well.

To extend on Jon’s race report from Oak Hill last weekend…

I drove into Henderson Saturday night, skipping practice because the weather was bad and I’d been up there the previous Sunday. Met up with the AF1 boys - we were all staying in Henderson’s finest “Woodland Hills Motel” – this place is seriously the pits.

My first race Sunday was LW Twins Exp., where I’m currently 2nd. Got an average start and passed for 3nd place on the first lap. Took an aggressive line up the inside of 2 SV’s in Oak Hill’s turn 6. Then got hooked up with Jon for the next few laps and we were flyin’ – I took almost 2 seconds off my best at Oak Hill with a 1:30.5. This is really crankin’ at Oak Hill on a stock RS-250 (I think Jon ran a 1:29.8). I ended up 3rd but solidified a 2nd overall in this class. There are some very fast experts on very fast SV’s in this class so I’m happy with the results.

Next race was F-40 LW. After being held up in traffic I was running in 2nd and gaining on the leader when the race was red flagged and not restarted. I am currently a solid 2nd in overall points. I was hoping to win this class at the beginning of the year - up against some really good racers.

My last race was F-CMRA MW – where we all race the RS-250’s. Jon got the holeshot and never turned back. I raced well and stayed close but there would be no way by so I settled for 2nd. I am currently in 2nd overall - a few points behind Jon so this finish did not improve my chances for a repeat championship. It’s been fun racing with Jon as we’ve been swapping wins in this class all year. I took a DNF in the first race so I’ve been playing catch-up since then. I have enjoyed the competition – it’s made me faster.

A quick note about racing RS-250’s against SV’s – a really good rider on a well built/sorted SV definitely has an advantage – BUT if you count the number of SV’s that finished behind both Jon and I this weekend, it’s an impressive number – we definitely kicked some SV ass (all year for that matter).

So a great weekend overall – as AF1-friend Kyle Rivers also sewed up 3 or 4 amateur class championships on an R6. Congrats to Jon – he had a big weekend with 4 wins.

My thanks again to AF1 Racing for all the support this season. We finish up at Cresson in less than 2 weeks.

This season has been awesome. Coming into the first round we had a lot of r&d to do on all of the supported bikes...it seemed impossible that the RS250's were going to win these championships against the mighty-motor SV650's that we were up against. Thanks to Jon, Bill and Greg, the 250cc Aprilias started to look like serious contenders for this years crowns. One by one they all got the new heads and motor mods that made all the difference in the world to how they came off the corners...and as the season progressed these guys made every practice and track day they could...and the lap times fell like rocks!

In the mini classes we have always done very well, even against 85cc GP framed bikes...but round one this year saw me hit the ground at like 80mph...it was rough and very dissapointing to me. It took some time to get the 69cc motor reliable, it started life stupid fast (19.3bhp) but short lived (4 hours run time) and even though I had a failure this weekend (totally a set up issue) it had been together for 17-18 hours of brutal abuse! I have had a bad season racing, with several falls and more motor problems than I care to think about...but iti is all sorted now for the final round I think.

Looking very forward to Cresson in a week.

Scooter, you have kicked ass too!

Hi Guys

Awesome race reports!

Sounds like you guys have the RS engines VERY well sorted!

Micah/Ed, how about updating us on the RS250 forum as to what mods and bits and pieces you have been doing to get such great performance?

(I don't think we have heard from you guys on a technical level for awhile ???)

Also are those heads available to us regular folk yet?

regards

Mark

I have to admit.....Jon turns some pretty impressive lap times and results on his Aprilia RS250. I have been racing 2-strokers since 1993.....no Aprilias so far  .......and I currently pilot a Honda RS250...I have about 3 sprint races on it. I haven't seen many people go that fast on an Aprilia since the National Aprilia Cup Series.
Jon.....if you ever get the chance....I'd like to meet ya and bench race with ya a bit.
Maybe at Cresson??

nobody can tune 2 strokes or even do anythin with them here
wud be nice too see what mods u have done? is it as extreme as colinskorns 74bhp rgv?

RS-250 Lap Times

Our laptimes have been fast all year.
In August running Cresson backward my best time was 1:23.2, John's was 1:22.8. These times could have put us top-10 in Expert 600 classes and damn close to the podium in amatuer 600s. You can check the times here : http://www.cmraracing.com/04Results/Event8/sprints/8sovwebgr.html

In June at TWS John ran a fast lap of 1:56.9 to my best of 1:55.4, though we have both recorded MyChron times in the 1:54's earlier in the year. This is fast - just off the pace Hopkins ran in 1999.

We have definitely been going fast and kicking SV ass all year. The bikes have been running great - thanks again to Ed/Micah everyone at AF1 for all the tuning and support.

Bill and Jon.........you should stop by my forum and make a few contributions in the Aprilia dept. Need some exposure there......if you want. Alot of Texas folks there but there are also a bunch from all around.

Sorry to hear about Cresson......stinks I know. Will LSTD refund your $$ ??

Jon - great opening report, I'm really glad to see there are some folks making that bike work. When I raced one in 2000 I was the only guy in the Florida region that could do anything with it. I was beating the SV-650's (all but one of 'em) all year long after about 2 track days of setup...on a completely stock bike. Mind you, the SV's were relatively new then too and the SV's of now are a lot quicker. Anyway, it's also amazing what you can get away with on that bike too. I would frequently blow by SV's that were braking for a corner and I'd still be on the gas, then just after passing them I'd do like an intentional stoppie just to fream'em out a bit and they would give me that extra bit of space on the exit...just enough to stay ahead of them to the next corner! Worked like a charm. Some of the SV guys would later tell my dad I was nuts and always backed off when I went by because they thought I was gonna crash and take them with me. It was all show because I knew they had the power on the exit. I've still never had more fun racing any other bike.
