View Full Version : Noisey RS250

Very concerned about my RS its always been noisey but when stationary it has a deep rumble noise from the engine. When revved up feels like a rattle has developed.

When at low revs it coughs a little and initial pick up is "lumpy".

It also has a nasty dead spot at 8000rpm coughs and splutters and then once over it goes like Sh*t.

Bike has only done 8000miles on the road.

Any ideas/ help /suggestions would be really helpfull.

Sounds like you neeed a top end rebuild. Or you have a serious timing problem.

Does the rumble change when you pull the clutch in? If it changes it is more likely to be the gearbox, if it doesn't then its more likely to be the crank. Crank bearings can wear prematurely if the engine has been starved of oil... If you suspect the crank, take the left engine cover off, take both the sparkplugs out and with the clutch pulled in spin the flywheel rotor by hand, and try to feel for 'notchiness' in the bearings. If its really bad wear of a crank bearing you should feel it, you won't feel the big/little end needle bearings though. When my bike had a big end go, it made more of a squeeking sound, but this was running dry with a blocked injector!

Finally 2 strokes sound a lot rougher at idle than four strokes. Try and listen to another one with about the same milage. If you're not sure, its probably best to strip the top end (or have it stripped) as crank bearing failure could damage one/both cylinders.
