Hello Everybody.
I have just bought a 1999 Pegaso 650, with
3000mls on the clock.
The bike is great, apart from that it backfires quite a lot when I shut the throttle off when going over about 40mph.
Is this normal, or is there air getting into the system
somewhere ???
any answers would be appreciated.

I think you have a slight leak in your exhaust system. The odd pop is not unusual but not all the time. Try tightening up the studs at the cylinder head as this is usually the place where a leak would have the greatest effect. Don't overdo it though. The last thing you want is to strip threads. On the forum tech tips page there are torque settings for the bike. You might find something there for the exhaust bolts.
