Got the peg, impulse buy of mate, a Uk P reg with 12000 miles on. Then crapped myself as realised that had told the partner that the bike would not increase our expenditure at all and next years wedding would not be affected. Then the bike started stalling, cutting out, back firing, a lead appeared on the side of the head, the brakes were not very good and the Manchester dealers can spot DIY fear from a thousand yards and increase thier prices accordingly. So started to search for help on the internet and found this. 4 weeks later, have a downloaded and printed out manual, several supportive emails, loads of shared expereince on how to do things, a greater sense of confidence.
PLUS !!!!! have dismantled, cleaned and replace carbs, brakes, plus new shoes, oil change, plug change, adjusted suspension to cater for my 16 stone weight, cleaned oiled, lubricated and generaly cared for every bit of the bike. The head gasket problem was a small leak from the water jacket, and this responded well to a small tightening of the head bolts which were quite loose!!! dont think this had a proper service in the early days.
The bike in now sooo sweet. It struggled to reach 100mph down hill, and now accelerates up to over 100 with ease, is lighter, nimble, never stalls, and best of all feels like it is all mine and we have now bonded.
It got the hump with me though when I tried to pull away with wheel lock on the front wheel, and threw me to the floor, so am aware that it needs respect as well as care.
Thanks for all the support, and will have no qualms in coming back for more. Now thinking of ways to secret money away to buy new exhaust silencers as mine are well rusty and want a new chain and tyres at some point.
