View Full Version : Wheel comparison, weight & dimensions

I originally started this thread to compare the weight of the many wheels available to fit the RSV, Tuono & Falco. I’ve updated it each time I found another set of wheels to weigh.
As you can see from the photos, I’ve been using the same scale for all measurements. This way we can make an accurate comparison.
Aprilia now has added the Shiver, Dorsoduro, Mana and RSV4 models to the lineup.
Fortunately, they kept the exact same wheel dimensions as before, so the older wheels will fit the newer bikes as well.
Rotor bolt pattern and dish is the same for all years.
Even the 25mm axles, axle nuts and wheel spacers are all the same, front and rear.
Note, the RSV4 and V4 Tuono uses a 10mm longer rear axle.
There is a small difference in wheel mounting dimensions that Aprilia changed starting with the 2003, 04 RSV.
Front:
All bikes equipped with radial mount front brake calipers have a 5mm wider rotor mounting flange (see photo).
Radial caliper front wheel = 115mm
Axial caliper front wheel = 110 mm
AF1 sells machined spacers to adapt the early wheels to later bikes:
http://www.af1racing.com/store/Scrip...idproduct=2421
Rear:
Starting with the 2004 RSV, 06 Tuono, Shiver, Dorso, Mana and RSV4, the rear wheel sprocket hub has been moved 3mm to the left of the rim centerline. The rear brake rotor to rim center distance is the same on all years.
2011 APRC RSV4 introduced a small change on the rear brake rotor mounting to accommodate the sensor ring.

Many of us use the older wheel on the newer bikes without issues, though the chain line will be slightly off, it is such a small amount that it has no effect on chain/sprocket wear.
Some people have used a shim to space the cush hub out the extra 3mm.

I just weighed a rear Brembo off an 01 on a triple beam balance with bearings and seal and drive flange with bushings. No axle spacer, disc/bolts, or valve stem. Comes in within a gram or two of 7 kilos. 15.43 lbs

Looking at all the weights of these wheels, some of them just don't add up.
The weights of the cast Brembos in particular.
AF1 list the Stock cast front as 11.85lbs which converts to 5.4kg.
Yet some have weight these ranging from 4.2kg (9.2lbs) to 4.4kg (9.7lbs)
(cast fake oz front wheel 4.9kgs save 500grams/ 1 pound off AF1 weights)
AF1 Stock cast rear wheel: 17.95lbs (8.2kg)
weight by others 6.7kg (14.7lbs) to 7kg (15.4lbs)
(cast fake oz back wheel 7.5kgs save 700grams/ 1.1/2 pounds off AF1 weights)
What I'm trying to say is maybe if AF1's weights are correct then the cast oz copies would be a half way weight saving on the way to forged wheel weights.
Cheap bastids like me could get oz looking wheels and save a little bit of weight, just not as much as the expensive real deals
EDIT: Just to confuse some more Aprilia state that the RSV4 forged wheels are, front 1.7kg lighter than stock and rear 2.4kg lighter than stock.
This would mean when you put the two together (weight saving from aprilia added to Amauri weight of the RSV4 wheels, you get a stock wheel weight (cast) of, 4.67kg front and 7.15kg rear, about 1.78 kgs lighter than cast brembo wheels if AF1 weights of them are correct.

the cast OZ look alikes found on 06-09 base Tuonos and base RSVRs are heavier than the older 5-spoke cast wheels from Brembo

I just weighed a set of the stock Aprilia OZ-copies from a 2009 DD and the weights are very close to what AF1 has listed.
Rear is a touch under 18 pounds.
Front is a little under 12 pounds.
Keep in mind that these wheels have EVERYTHING on them: spacers, cush drive, cush rubbers, bolts, hardware, valves, etc -- even a couple ounces of balancing weight. So actual clean/stripped wheel weights will be lower.
Sorry I can't be even more precise but my more delicate scale tops out at 10 pounds so I can't use it for these.
Hope this helps.
(And by the way, these wheels are FOR SALE right now here:

And they look crazy fragile, too.
I'd really like to get some lightweight wheels, but BST and Marvics seem to really push the envelope. I'd be afraid I'd break them on some of the rough streets around Manhattan and Brooklyn I have to ride. Any engineers or materials scientists out there with suggestions?
Oh, and those gray Marchesinis ARE hot.

Many have forgotten that Marvic is one of the oldest foundry specializing in magnesium castings.
In fact, Mr. Marchesini started out as an employee of Marvic.
http://www.yoyodyneti.com/Product/marvic%20presentation.mov
They make a very good wheel, both cast and forged types.
Also keep in mind that a true race wheel is intended for lightweight race bikes.
They may not be strong enough for a street bike that weighs 100+ lbs more, especially when you also consider that many of us weigh quite a bit more than most pro racers. Do you carry a passenger?

I have BSTs on my bike and we have shitty roads around here. While I do not purposely hit any big holes or bumps, shit happens and you get one once in awhile. No signs or issues so far. Remember, your tire and suspension are doing the vast majority of the shock absorption. Unless you are doing wheelies/stoppies and slamming the tires down or hitting holes or bumps with significant vertical surfaces at speed and/or let your tires go soft and dont notice it (hard to imagine...) you should be fine.

Can you AF1 guys bring the PVMs back to the US? Can't seem to find them anymore other than directly from the factory.

Given these weights, what would you guys consider the best value for a track day RSV? Forged magnesium or forged aluminum? Brand? Others that aren't listed here?
amauri
12-01-2011, 09:06 PM
The best value is a set of forged OZ aluminum.
They fit the best, are lighter than all but magnesium and CF and can be found used for a reasonable price.
If buying used wheels, always look for wheels with the original finish.
