I wanted to see if there is enough interest out there for the Aprilia owners to get together this May and ride around the beautiful Colorado Rockies. If I get a decent response, I will take the lead in organizing this and proposing a route etc. I would be even willing to try and contact ApriliaUSA and see if they wanted to sponsor a "mini ride event". I am hoping at least some of the folks from Texas and other nearby states are ready and willing to do this :)

I rode around Durango, Teluride, Silverton, Ouray last year on my Futura and it was FANTASTIC.

I was on those same roads this past July....Stunning...

Note that a Dallas Futura long-distance guy is starting to put together a Futura rally May 16-18 in Boerne, Texas. Certainly not the San Juan Skyway <img src="http://www.fadzter.com/smilies/drool.gif" style="border:0;"/>, but it's close enough for me to carve a little time to attend. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

I'm certainly in, if the change in my marital status doesn't force me to sell my bike ! :(

Hi Paul - I am thinking an extended weekend. I will put together a proposal this weekend and post it. I just wanted to see if there was enough interest before sinking too much planning time. Now that you have asked, I will do it.:)

Skip, that'd be <a href="http://www.waltzacrosstexas.com" target="top">Jack Tollett</a>, cool guy, happened to meet him at the Dallas moto show, he's taking a Futura on the '03 Iron Butt Rally

He's on the Futura <a href="http://www.rst1000.org" target="top">mailing list</a>.

Since I live in Denver, definately count me in if a Pegaso rider is OK.
You should post this on the other model sections. I know 2 other Peg riders in the metro area and a couple of RSV riders.

Hi All - Thanks to the flu, I wasn't able to put a route together the past weekend. My apologies.

I now have a route proposal and will post it as soon as Micah can send me the web link.

My first proposal is to ride on May 2nd, 3rd and the 4th. We would meet in the morning in Buena Vista and ride together from there. Stay one night in Durango (Friday night) and the second night in Ouray or Monte Vista. Third day would be half day of riding together and then heading home.

All Aprilia riders who are interest in a friendly, enjoyable and safe ride are welcome.

If I get enough interest in these dates then we will move forward. If these dates don't work for you, please suggest an alternative.

Once we have a weekend selected I will post more details on the logistics. Thanks for your interest.

I'd be up for a trip to Colorado myself. I'll be out of school in May and ready to take a vacation.

Bummer,
That's the same weekend as the AMA Superbike race at Sears Point.

Have a great ride!

Kenpokev - Go ahead and propose a weekend in May that you will be available for and it may turn out to be the best weekend for the majority of us.

That is a nice route. I backpacked all over that section of Colorado back in the 70's. Nice roads. Lots of really nice rides nearby too.

Even if it was another weekend, I doubt I could join you guys. With 3 kids at home, it's tough to escape very often. Plus I'd have to add several extra days to the trip for the back 'n forth.

Looks like a superb ride though...maybe another time.
Cheers,
Kevin

Why would it take three days to cover that much ground. Durango to Ouray is only a couple of hours.

Good question. And the answer is we would checkout the Mesa Verde Park in the morning. Ride and walk around the cliff dwellings for a while. We would also take detours around the Teluride area.

Other suggestions welcome.

Last year when I toured this area, we stayed at various hotels running in the $120 plus per night range and I would characterize them OK but not great.

This year I recommend we stay at B&B's as they tend to be very comfortable, enjoyable and usually have great breakfast. Checkout the following websites for the B&B's in the Durango and Ouray area. They seem nice and the prices are relatively very reasonable.

www.durango-co-lodging-in...vation.htm (http://www.durango-co-lodging-inn.com/durango-reservation.htm)

www.chinaclipperinn.com/ (http://www.chinaclipperinn.com/)

I hope this will get your appetites going for the trip. In the next few weeks I would like to hear from those of you who really want to do this trip and we should then put some firm plans in place.

There is nothing like relaxing at a peaceful and quaint place after a long ride and of course a great breakfast in the morning is just the icing on the cake. :)

Are you sure the roads will be cleared of snow by then? I've ridden the Rockies in July and encountered a snowstorm.

A few notable places we encountered during our (car) trip to the same area this past July:

Durango: Scoot N'Blues Cafe - food's ok, but the old relic bikes hanging from the ceiling are cool.

Ridgway: <a href="http://www.chipeta.com" target="top">Chipeta Sun Lodge</a> - Nice too pricey for a room with a spa, short ride to Ouray, Telluride (you go past Ralph Lauren's huge ranch, if that's worth anything to anyone; I know *I* wish I could afford that 10-20k acres... ).

Ridgway: <a href="http://www.truegritcafe.com/info.htm" target="top">True Grit Cafe</a> - Too crowded when we stopped to eat, but looks fun. A number of John Wayne movices were filmed in this area, including, er, True Grit ;) .

Ouray: <a href="http://www.stelmohotel.com/buen.htm" target="top">Buen Tiempo</a> restaurant - Good Tex-Mex, look at the ceiling when you go in, give the waiter a dollar to find out how it got that way. :p

Ouray: Box Canon Falls park, Hot springs pool, Cascade Falls are all worth a stop/look, imho.

Telluride: We splurged and stayed a few nights at the <a href="http://www.thepeaksresort.com/" target="top">Wyndham Peaks Resort</a> up in the Village. Pretty idyllic: awesome massages spa area, views. Riding there on the RST would've made it perfect. Food price$ are outrageous; take the free cable car to downtown Telluride and grab something at <a href="http://www.toski.com/bakedintel/index.html" target="top">Baked In Telluride</a>. And don't forget to hike or maybe ride up to <a href="http://www.dianefineart.com/photoalbum/pages/scan_co224.htm" target="top">Bridal Veil Falls</a>

Rico: <a href="http://ricotheatrecafe.com/index.html" target="top">Rico Theatre and Cafe</a> - Fun little place. We had a good basic breakfast there, could be jumpin' if you hit it on the right night. And getting there during daylight promises spectacular views (we went down from Telluride, through Lizard Head pass).

Gunnison: Stayed at the <a href="http://www.commerceteam.com/mary.html" target="top">Mary Lawrence Inn</a>, a nice B&B. Turned out we're not big on B&Bs, but the proprietor is very nice, and puts out an awesome breakfast.

Hope this helps. I'd love to find a way to make this trip on the RST....:p

Buck000 thanks for taking the time to post the info on the Telluride/Durango area. What is preventing you from joining this trip?

Dan - The last couple of years have been really dry in Colorado. All passes have opened at least a month or two ahead of time. Snow in Colorado is very unpredictable. We could easily get a snow storm in September. I will however double check typical road conditions during May.

<blockquote><strong><em>Quote:</em></strong><hr>Buck000 thanks for taking the time to post the info on the Telluride/Durango area.
My pleasure. I dream of living in the mountains Some Day, and my little vacation was a slice of heaven...

<blockquote><strong><em>Quote:</em></strong><hr>What is preventing you from joining this trip?
Time, mainly. I'd have to add about 4 days just to get there and back from the Austin, TX, area (farging 2nd largest state and all :( ). I have other, more weenie excuses, like almost no touring/riding experience  , but it's mainly days away from my wife/daughter. These days, I'm OK with 1-3 day trips. <em>sigh...</em>

Anyway, there's also talk of a Futura meet in mid-May in Boerne, TX (a pale imitation of SW CO, but reasonably nice). I can make that one... :p

I live just east of Boulder..... I think that I can attend! My girlfriend is on a Ducati and we haven't seen a single Futura in the 6 months I've had the bike, it would be great to see a posse of them.
