I just confirmed this with my sales rep at Indy. This year it is a little different. Anyone who buys a ticket for the race, will be allowed to park on the back straight for free. All you need to show is your ticket for that day and then you will be allowed to enter the in field and park on the back straight.
In years prior you had arm bands, but they are not needed this year, only your ticket. It is a 20-30 minute walk from the back straight to the "other side" and leaving can take longer due to the traffic jam getting out and even walking across the bridge!
I am still buying a 3 day pass for Paved Lot 3, it is alot closer than the free stiff and easier to get back to downtown afterwards.
