View Full Version : Starter...I know

I know it's bee beat to death, and trust me, I've searched.

Long story short, I put about 100 miles on the bike today. By far the best day I've had on her. I stopped at my local NAPA to see if they carried oil since she's due for an oil change. Went to start her back up, she turned over a few times, popped to start, then it went into it's 6sec delay. I waited, turned her off, back on, and tried to start again. Then the starter slowed like the battery was going dead, and after another 4 or so rotations, she stopped and now the relay just clicks when I press the starter.

I had a problem about a month ago, when the starter started squealing like a pig. I let a friend ride it who overheated the starter since he stalled out a couple times without letting it warm up fully. I took it apart, blew it out, and lubed her up and we were good until now. I tried the same thing, but she doesn't even turn over now. All I hear is the relay clicking. I checked the fuse and it's OK. Checked my wires and they are ok. Anyone heard of this or have an idea as to what it could be?

I'm going to start by probably ordering a new starter, and also probably the starter relay and seeing if that works. Thanks!

smelling like burnt stator windings inside the starter?

There was a company mentioned a while back that rebuilt starters, in re-enforced condition... Think the guy that used them, never had starter issues since.

I have had my starter fixed by www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com and it is still working. Started it about 10 times today of a 70 mile ride. Without warning it has squealed and not started the bike, but I have cleaned it and greased it and its back up and running. It's not the perfect solution but it's the only one I know of.

Thanks guys. I had seen the info regarding Rick. I'm probably just going to order a new starter and relay. I'll probably end up sending the old one out to Rick to have rebuilt and keep on the side just incase.

Dom what bike? I have been thinking about doing the same thing. Been checking different starters and going back and forth about what brackets might be needed.

A different and better starter would be swell...

I've put mine back together with a new positive starter cable AND a cable from mounting bolt to the negative battery terminal. Seems quite a bit better so far...

emil55,

I've been contemplating doing the same thing. I do hear it makes quite a difference.

As for my issue, the new starter fixed it! Fuses and relays were fine, I did top off the battery as a precaution. I'll be honest, as soon as I put the starter in, she fired RIGHT up. I would say if you're having starting problems, the starter may have just burnt up and it's spinning slower than before. This is what happened with mine, and even after I lubed it up, it took longer and longer to start before before she finally bit the bullet. I would say if the starter is making any king of "squealing" noise, take it apart, blow out the end portion where the brushes are, and lube it a little bit. I think this will prolong the starter life. I will probably tear it apart annually and clean it out just to be safe..Not to mention I still have the old one to send out.

Yeah that's kinda my conclusion... I reckon because it's on the light side, you've gotta have everything in its favour. Then as soon as it gets stressed through excessive winding, dodgy battery/connections, poor cabling etc, it slows down and as soon as it slows down, it's all over.

I burnt out 2 starters that were apparently rewound heavy in frighteningly quick succession and I hope this extra earth cable helps...

For shits and giggle's, my cousin just picked up an 02 Suzuki GSXR 1000 with a blown motor. Started tearing her down tonight and the starter looks VERY similar to ours. It won't bolt on as the rear end of the housing has 2 brackets, but you could probably work something out, maybe keep our rear housing and swap the rest over? I'll have to look into it since the parts are laying around and I still have my spare starter....we could probably go crazy with this, it's just a matter of time, money, and patience.

Here's a pic

l am working with the same issue, and looking for a starter from a different bike. Can you measure the splines and the end at the o-ring???
(Our starter on sxv is 11.6mm at the splines (9splines) and the engine end at the o-ring is 30mm and 16.5mm long)

just bumped into this...

http://www.dhgate.com/gy6-starter-motor-scooter-parts-62735/p-ff808081259b58a70125b64dd5567f59.html

the measurements are pretty similar to what we got...even the spacing between the bolt holes...... except for the length of the thingy where the splines are... seems to be 1-2 mm shorter than ours...

anyone dares to try one? only 32 USD ;)

dhGate can be a bit hit and miss. Check his feedback too, a couple of unhappy people.
