View Full Version : Valve Adjustment: To Do or Not To Do

I need a bit of advice:

I have an 07 SXV 550 (orange sealant) that I bought new from AF1 two years ago. They de-restricted it, added Mivv exhaust, AF1 air filter, and custom map. I have just over 2400 miles on it. It runs perfectly. Starts the first time every time -original starter- and has never given me any problems (proverbial knock on wood). I've religiously changed the oil every 300 miles (GB and engine). I've used it for two track days otherwise it's been mostly street/commuting.

As long as it's running fine is there any reason to check the valve adjustment?

For those that have had your dealers do the adjustment about how much did it cost you?

For those that have done the adjustment yourself how many hours did it take you to complete? What special tools are required? What do you think your total parts cost was?

Thanks!!

Joe

I'm at the same point with mine. I could do it myself byt these things are so freaking touchy that I'm scared. Are you in TX since you bought it from AF1? I haven't seen another SXV around here

I had mine done at 3200 miles. It was getting hard to start. One valve was slightly out of tolerance and the throttle bodies needed sync and the throttle cable adjusted to be at 11% with the yellow cold start button. the bike runs and starts much better now.

I here you're pain. I am in Joliet IL, about 40 miles southwest of Chicago. My fear is I get into it and screw something up. I don't have any decent dealers with a reasonable distance to help me to fix it so it's a trip to AF1 or amauri, etc, etc.

I took mine to Edwardsville Illinois (Moto Italia) to have the work done. The tech there has been trained on the SXV and did a great job. He did have one question. I called Allen Noland and let him talk to my tech and answer his question. I will be bringing the bike bike to him for the next checkup.

I'm originally from Edwardsville (live in San Francsico now)...I'm still ridiculously amazed that my small town has an Aprilia dealer!

Do you need to drop the engine just to check the valves or to adjust them. I was thinking maybe I could check them myself and if the needed adjustment take it into the shop.

I sure I have read in previous threads that you can do it in situ but it's a complete pain in the arse and simply faster to drop the engine.
