When the Buell announcement was made, there was a fair amount of talk that VW might have bought them out because VW had an interest in entering the motorcycle field. Well, they certainly have (had?) some cause to burn because they just bought 20% of Suzuki (http://www.superbikeplanet.com/2009/Dec/091209a.htm) for about 2 billion dollars. That's billion... with a 'B'.

It is the car sector. VW was looking to buy Mazda since they seperated from Ford. They didn't/couldn't so they bought into Suzuki. http://blogs.thecarconnection.com/marty-blog/1039898_vw-buys-into-suzuki-kelley-and-j-d-power-results-today-at-high-gear-media

They probably could've bought Saab for less than that.

Saab is too in the same product line. I think they were trying to expand into other price points. Besides, GM seems to think that the Saab line holds some mystery to auto excellence and is very hesitant to sell any of the unit. Guess that's why they were a great seller, excellent reputation and perfect product delivery.

From my understanding they bought into Suzuki Motor Corp

The primary reason was to get big a presence in small cars for India and southeast Asia, not for bikes. Two of the biggest emerging markets for the industry.
