Compared to say a Tuono, you would be trading the top end in favor of a lighter, smaller and more nimble package .... also the air cooled engine makes for a much cleaner, tidier package.

The main questions would be if you can do without a top end , and if you can deal with Ducati service (cost/quality/intervals)

I think it is an excellent evolution of the Monster line. More modern yet unmistakable. My usual riding buddy has an S2R 1000 and it is a great bike. Like Geedub said, smaller and lighter than the T but not nearly as fast. I'm 5"11'' and find the old monsters a little cramped compared to the Tuono. The new 1100 looks to have improved comfort, more power and less weight. It will be closer to the T in performance but still out of it's league.

I like Monsters too but I didn't notice this new one is air cooled.

I'll be on the lookout for a lightly used S4R - I've seen them on ebay or CycleTrader for 7-8K. Great streetbike - could be my next bike...

I had one recently. Bought it off the Monster forum with 3 k miles for $6,800.
Sold it a year later for the same price. I wasn't too crazy about that bike.
The riding position was not great, the power was adequate but most of all the chassis was out of date. It's nimble and handles ok on smooth pavement (just ok) but as soon as the pavement deteriorated it became really twitchy and jittery. Not in a scary way but pretty mediocre for an eyetalian bike -especially after having owned an RSV.
Oh and the white wheels are really GHEY!! :burnout:

Other than the price I could be interested in the new air cooled model. It has all the torque , loses the top end (nothing above 8k rpms) but is at least 80lbs lighter and that makes for a whole other experience!!

GeeDub that bike looks sweet to me - that's pretty much what I've been looking at.. I've never ridden one though - I'm definitely done with the race-bike ergos on the street so I'm looking for something like this. I'd probably be better off on a Tuono...

bicilindricov60 - sorry for jacking your thread - that new 1100 is really sweet in fact I saw one near my house the other day. Needs Termi's - it sounded too quiet.

I've had 4 Ducatis and would buy one more so I'm not biased against them but the only advantages the S4R has over the Tuono is the low seat and the number of dealers. Aside from that the Tuono beats it in handling, power, brakes, everything.

If it's the same motor that's found in the Hypermotard, I would pass..

That front end is defective, it won't stay on the ground!! LOL my 900ss was the same way, on the opposite I found the RSV could keep the front hoop down under a lot of acceleration.

Anyone know what the 696 monster is like. Reviews are good but I'd rather hear real riders views more.

7500 miles between services BTW.

I want a bike that has that problem!

I love the way the 1100 looks, especially in pictures, but in person it looked too small. It looks and feels like the 696, which to me just felt too cramped. I lust over the single-sided swing arm though...

Too small...I'll take a more rigid swingarm and a real frame, thanks :)

No offense, but I rode the S4RS last summer, and it was a POS in comparo to the T. I didn't own the T at that point, so I think that makes my opinion unbiased. Let me put it this way... I rode the S4RS, and thought nice, but ehh. I seriously liked the 696 more (that's a great bike, but didn't get on the 1100 this year at Duc Truck to compare...shoot) The T on the other hand... I test rode it and I'm permanently addicted.

IMO the best Ducs in the past 3 years are the SC1000, 696, and a Hyper with open clutch and termis, however useless the later is. Wish I got on the 1100, and can't wait to try out the Street Fighter, but the S4RS ain't all it's cracked up to be.
