Hi all,
I'm pleased to say I took delivery of my new scooter today and have put about 10 miles on it so far. I'd like to tell you about some things that have me concerned and ask: are these things normal during break-in, normal at all times, an indication of a problem, or something that can be improved by derestricting?
First, the engine only runs smoothly and produces power starting at about 7500 rpm. Unfortunately, I have to go through the hesitation and rough running of the lower rpm's to get there and that can make it take a while. I think I read that this can be greatly improved through some ECU modifications. Is that what I need?
Second, I've noticed a couple of trouble lights: when I turn the engine off but the key remains on, the display shows "EFI." that is not shown during startup or while running. Once, after shutting the engine off, the display showed "EFI" and the general warning light was also solidly lit. Both light went out when I turned the key off and did not reappear at startup.
Finally, I'm concerned about treating the bike properly during break in. Part of my commute is a long rising hill. To keep up a reasonable speed I find myself holding WOT, yet that is not recommended during the break-in period. What to do?

You need new software,
Hold tight as your problems will be solved as people log on that have your answers.
You dealer has some things to learn also.
Keep using the search features on this forum and you will learn alot in the meantime.
Congrats, you have a great scoot!

Thanks for the tips. I'm not sure what prompted you to say that about my dealer, but I agree, with qualifications: They are a new dealer who gave me a great price and buying experience. That said, I learned today that their Aprilia mechanic is only part time and I already had experienced the salesmen's total ignorance of derestricting.

i dont know wat the hell is up with these aprilia dealers all over USA...they absolutely no knowledge about aprilias. I knew more about my scoot after about 2 weeks of owning it than they did...its sad..good thing there are a lot of helpful people on this forum..

If you turn off the red stop switch to kill the engine, it turns off power to the engine computer (ECU), the dash shows the general warning light and EFI and plug symbol, because it can no longer communicate with the ecu... This is normal...
You should find out what spark plug they put in your scoot. My dealer threw in an NGK CR7EIX, which ran like crap -- complete sputtering mess with little power in the first 1000-1500 RPM after the clutch caught. The NGK ZMR7AP is a favourite, but apparently it's better suited to the Ditechs rather than PureJets (if you have a US '09, it's PureJet). The Champion RG6YCA has been working very nicely for me.

In fact, the ZMR7AP works fantasically with the PureJet engine also. It is designed for both DiTech & PureJet. Simply the best.

Welcome to the forum!
It sounds like your ECU has already been de-restricted - what is your top speed and top RPM?
Like was mentioned, find out what spark plug you have and let us know. Pull it out and look at it. Even in the very beginning it is possible that the plug is a little fouled if you weren't getting proper combustion.
Also, ask the dealer what kind of 2 stroke oil it was filled with and ask them if they changed the rollers in the CVT.
Read the 'sticky' threads. Especially the FAQ section.
When the key is on but the red switch is off, the EFI (electronic fuel injection) light is normal. When you turn the red switch on, you need to let the fuel pump run for about 5 seconds (until it stops buzzing) before you start it.
Most people believe that you should run the piss out of it from the beginning or other problems will develop. Just avoid long periods of WOT or running at the same RPM. There is a protective coating inside your cylinder that needs to be burned off. Use good fuel and it wouldn't hurt to run some fuel injector cleaner through there as well.

you are going through what everyone on here has been dealing with on their new 09 as well. the delaers dont seem to know how to properly derestrict and as a result the bike bucks like a bronco and sputters. for me 95% was fixed with the installation of 2.8.0 in dev mode along with the ZMR7AP for the last 5%. i have 2 x 09's and this was the case with both. also my dealer had told me that reguklar gas would be fine, that was making it run like shit. go to shell and get some 93 and that will help also.

Most say Shell is not good for our scoots.
I never was anal abour fuel till I used Shell for a while and developed problems. Scoot wouldn't run, I dumped gas and put Exxon in tank and started running fine again instantly. Don't get me wrong, Shell is great fuel, just not in Ditech.
I will avoid Shell like the plague till it's proven that we are all wrong here.

Mine sputtered until the ECU was put in "dealer development mode."
Now it runs great.

thats interesting ill keep that in mind. do you agree that the higher octane is neccesary? like I said the dealer was wrong on almost everything. I spoke to a scooter guy who specialized in 2 strokes. he recomended 93 or high octane but didnt mention shell. where is live it seems to be the higher octane i could find. usually its 87/87/91..... shell has 93 .......im trying to think of whoelse has it in RI. ill give it a try and report back. i havent noticed anything so far with the sheell but its only been one tank.
Thanks for the info!

I use Sunoco 91 octane when possible after reading here that it is the equivalent of the recommended Euro 95 octane.

I used Shell because of the convenience also, and the high octane, and the quality reputation etc. I'ts great gas, apparantly not for our scoots though till proven differently.
The high octane issue I haven't decided yet.
Scootnfast's website has info regarding the high octane debate.
It just may be better to run regular grade gasoline as it is said that our scoots aren't that effecient at burning off all the extras in premimum formulas and will leave scum or carbon.
I'm not the one that knows much regarding this issue and still use premimum till I investigate more.
Enigma Deadsouls has alot of knowlege about premimum gas and Ditech's effeciency.
edit;
Anyone is welcome to correct me if I have any innacuracies as I hate poor info running in circles here on this forum.

I have seen a speed of 45 mph on level ground. I'm not sure of the max rpm but I know it's been over 8000. I haven't checked the spark plug yet. It's hard to believe anyone would have deresteicted this bike given the dealer's limitations mentioned above.

Mine did 45 when it was in restricted mode. The '09 "restriction" is pretty minor. I only got a few more mph after the ECU change, but it ran a ton smoother, without the sputtering.
The ECU change, and rollers in the 4.5-5.0 gram range is what most people have had success with on the '09's. I have 4.5 grams in mine, and it is as light as i'd go, and possibly the slightest bit too light.
I haven't noticed any decreased speed from 4.7 to 4.5, and acceleration is definitely better, but it revs around 9k in cruising mode instead of 8.4k or so with 4.7 grams.
I am going to try half and half 4.7 and 5 grams, with a 7% increased contra spring today(heavier contra spring has the same effect as lighter rollers).
Anyway...

Oh. On the "run the piss out of it off the bat" issue.. I think that is referring to a dealer who told us about his brand new sr50 setup procedure, which involved running it at full throttle for around 10 miles right off the bat, then going to whatever break in procedure you prefer. That ranges from very conservative, to moderate (like don't run it at any rpms for too long for the first few hundred miles, sparing use of wide open) to "just ride it normally from the get-go. You could use search to find all the discussions about that, there are a lot of them.
