With US motorcycle road racing going through a lot changes in the rules for the 2009 season it has been a somewhat confusing period waiting to find out exactly how the new series is going to play out. With horsepower restrictions, limits on engine modification and tighter control of after market parts, there seems to be one area of concern that no one seems to be addressing. What about the Umbrella Girls? Is the era of the full-blown Super Umbrella Girl over? Are the new rules going to limit the modifications allowed? Are teams going to be fined, penalized, and thrown out of racing for using illegally modified Umbrella Girls?

Just comparing the spec sheets of some of the top girls this year compared to a 2008 Superbike, and you can see the level of modification needed to compete at this level is already extremely high. A situation that has meant only the top factory teams can afford to run this level of equipment. I can understand the concerns of privateer teams. How can they compete? How can they field a competitive Umbrella Girl?

So maybe limiting the modifications might give a chance to level the playing field? To allow the privateers to compete with the top factory teams. But what are we going to be left with on our race grids? With most of the top-level models not only undergoing highly extensive physical modification, there is all the mental tuning that has been undertaken: Expensive therapy, counseling, support groups, to mention just a few of the internal changes. Then there is the diet and exercise regime. Without the ability to have gas sponsors, race teams are going to be having a tough time fueling race bikes next year. But what about the poor privateer stocking up on organic, de-caffeinated, low fat, low sodium, low taste organic health food and tofu burgers for their Umbrella Girl?

We are moving into uncharted waters here, and can only hope a resolution is prompt to avert what could be a potential disaster. Just imagine a bunch of unmodified Umbrella Girls, in drab olive muu muus and Doc Martins, with their hair in pigtails wearing horn rimmed spectacles on the grid. Race officials could even view contact lenses as a non-permissible modification. Hell, they might even ban the removal of facial hair, and that could get confusing. And what if a minimum weight limit was imposed? Where would they hide 30 pounds of lead if they came up short on the scales? The mind can only imagine the trouble. Next they would start demanding a certain IQ, which could certainly make for some very empty grids. And we all know that doesn’t make for a great race.

Then, heaven forbid we have a series of technical inspections after each and every race. Look at the trouble that was caused when that
happy and gracious Australian fellow was found to have a crankshaft not coming straight from the factory. The last thing we need is a bunch of officials checking for internal modifications after each race. How’s a team supposed to maintain its integrity if they are caught running a cheater motor at this level of competition?

So dear friends as the debate rages, take comfort that all of us here at Couger will be burning the midnight oil preparing our legal cases for keeping fully tuned Umbrella Girls on the American race grids for 2009. We believe that teams should be allowed to modify their Umbrella Girls to the best of their abilities without restriction and we need your support.

I left Long Beach around 1:00pm and was home about 11:00pm including dropping the bike off and stopping for dinner and fuel.

Not bad really. Didn't hit any real traffic either. just a little when I first got into vegas around 5:00.

I don't think it is that bad; friends crashing at your place (in random places in the house) can be annoying; I think that is why the drivers are as bad as they are.
