Who here regularly uses the Falco for longer rides?
What mods have you done for comfort? Which ones have helped you personally the most?
Or do you feel comfortable with the bike stock?
I did 350 miles on mine yesterday and by the end I was feeling it. Mainly in the lower back but also the butt. I am coming from a more upright bike so may get used to the bar reach, but it looks like at the very least
a Sargent seat is in my future.
I have read about the Giles risers here and elsewhere, I have a feeling I may be dropping $ on those pretty soon also.

I do long rides on my stock handlebar and seat. I'll ride as much as 500 mi in a day. I start to hurt after a while too, would like to do a bar set up that makes the bars a little higher and more sweept back. I've looked into aftermarket bar risers and it looks like they all have drawbacks and even fail to make a substantial difference in comfort. The fighter kit has higher bars that sweep back but it requires changing some body parts. Speigler has offered a nice setup too but it required rerouting the wires and longer cables. I wish aprilia came out with a bar setup including all hardware necessary for the transformation. I don't think it'll ever happen. I'll just keep my falco stock and ride my road bike more, that should give me the phisycal condition to ride the motorcycle on long rides. A lot cheaper too.

after about 2.5 hours droning on the freeways, the Aprilia Carbon cans stop being fun (noise and vibrations). On long stretches, I put them back on.

I go on long, multi-day rides and find that I can go pretty far (several hundred miles) on the stock saddle before buttache starts to set in. Still, I'm looking for even more comfort and will be investing in a Sargent seat soon -- apparently, it's gotten great reviews from endusers.

I can do about 150 miles at a strech, and 300 miles is around my limit as far as riding consecutive days. Further if I've been riding a lot. This was good enough to take me from NJ to Deal's Gap and back, a 2500 mile trip, in a long week (9 days, with 2 days spent local). Thankfully, the tank and my buttocks both run dry at around the same time my bladder fills. So it all works out pretty nicely!
The OEM seat was OK, but I ride close to the tank and on a long day the sculpted edges near the front would pressure the insides of my thighs. So I had Sargent repack it for me adn make the front a little more rounded. This was before they had a ready made seat.
I eventually also did risers (neck injury) and rearsets ('cause I can...).

I want to preface what I am going to tell you by saying that my Falco is the best bike I have had so far for long distances.
That being said, I can only do between 250-350 miles a day max on my bike (depends on road conditions, temp. and what not...). It gets to be gruelling for me to go any longer. My wrists take a beating and my tailbone goes numb beyond that and I know myself well enough to know that if I ride a long way in 1 direction I better get off still fresh enough that I want to get back on it to ride home.
My old FZR could only give me an absolute max. 180 miles in a day and then I turned violent and self loathing. :mad:
My old SV650S would yeild the low 200 mile range and mostly I got tired of downshifting all the time. :x
The Falco is like a Goldwing compared to those two bikes and I love riding to my limits in every way.

A lot of my day rides are in the 200-250 mile range, without much problem. I've also ridden the Falco from New York to Alabama and back. Total was about 2600 miles, probably 60% back roads and 40% highway droaning. Each direction was about three and a half days, so figure about 370 miles/day. There were a few 250 mile days, and a few 400-450 mile days. Overall, once I got used to riding for seven to eight hours, I could do the 300 mile days without too much discomfort. By 350 miles, I was hurting and by 400 miles I was cramped and sore. 450 miles was agony. I know, I know, I'm a lightweight...:rolleyes:
In retrospect, it's tough to remember what gave me problems first -- my wrists, my knees or my ass. I think my ass started aching first, then my wrists and finally my knees if I'd been in the saddle for a long time. For what it's worth, the Falco is slightly more comfortable for this kind journey than was my '97 YZF1000. I wouldn't have even considered the same ride on my '00 R1. Still, I might give Sargent a call next month and order up a new saddle.

Far cheaper than a whole new Seargents seat, not that a full job on it would be by far the best thing to do, you could always try a sheepskin pad for the seats.
Whilst it's not actaul padding per se, the shagg of the sheep's pelt, gives enough extra padding, just to take the edge off of a longish ride. Give it a go, and around $30 Australian. Cheap!
I'm 6'4", and after about every 90 mins, I start to ache a little in my arse, my kness get stiff, and my lower back also (but that's all from age:rollin: ). I've done 600 miles in a day, and was glad to get off for a nice rest, at the end of it. This was with stops around 90 mins at the start of the day then 60 mins at the end of the day. 350-400 in a day is very easy on the Falco.
But lets be honest it is a "sports-tourer", and also the best in this catergory, it's not a "Tourer-sports". If you want a longer distance mount, a Futura or similar would be your cup of tea.

I ordered a Sargent today, I hope to get it next week sometime.
I think I can toughen up my back by riding more, but don't much like the prospect of leathering up my ass from repeated chappings <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o">
On a related topic, have you seen what this guy is doing on an R1?

The seat'll help, but a lot of it comes down to how in shape for riding are you, plus your riding style.
If you're lazy and lean on the handlebars, your arms, wrists, and shoulders are going to take a pounding and will very quickly limit the length of time you can ride. Your legs, midsection, and back are the strongest muscles in your body. If you discipline yourself a bit and keep the weight off the top half of your bod, you'll be able to ride farther, and will be more relaxed doing it.

Do you wear leather pants on your long trips? I found that when I wear jeans, I get sore much, much faster than when wearing my leathers. Also, since the rear shock is junk and requires max preload unless you weigh 130lbs, you will get your arse beat up. An aftermarket shock will not only make it handle better but also a tad more comfortable.
Also, make sure you don't have anything coming down the chute. That's a sure way to get uncomfortable while riding. :p

Since I adjusted the levers properly the wrists are not a problem, just the lower back and butt. I agree that I need to build up my stamina for riding a sportbike again because I have been riding a couch for the last year, a BMW R1150R. Of course I regularly did 500 mile plus days on that couch.
I wear padded bike shorts under my riding pants, they help alot but a bad seat is a bad seat and will cause problems, I have found. So I'll give the Sargent a try.
Aftermarket shock is high on the list at this point, my preload is already maxed which helps handling but you are right it does make for a rougher ride and consequently contributes to monkey butt syndrome :mad: .

Doesn't seem to have as much rise or quite as much adjustability for reach as the Gillies has, but I like the fact it is a complete system (cables. lines, everything) .

that's great but compared to an rsv the falco stock bars are probably 2" higher already. Maybe we can have Cycle cat look into making something specific for falcos.

Exducman, I was worried about that very fact so I emailed Cycle Cat for more information. They were not able to provide specifics about the Mille setup on a Falco. They did say they are looking in to producing a Falco specific kit as they have had some interest of late.
I'm sure it wouldn't hurt for everyone who is interested to email them, the more interest they see the more likely they are to make a kit sooner rather than later.

I've gotten as comfortable as possible now with my Falco. Here's my list:
Two Bros bar risers
Works Performance rear shock
Liquicell bicycle shorts
Gel padded riding gloves
The biggest factor is the Sargent seat. This makes all the difference in the world. No more squirming after 200 miles...It's still no Futura, but it is much more comfortable now

I contacted them awhile back asking if the Mille kit would fit the Falco due to the similar layout. At that time they said they'd check (which it sounds like they have now) and that they'd produce something specific if the interest was there. As it is now, a good point was made on the +2" measurement claim when used on a Mille. Does anyone know how much higher the Falco clip-ons really are compared to the Mille? Either way, keep contacting them - I'd like to see a Falco specific set up.

Aftermarket bars/risers all clamp to your forks, and as long as 1) the forks are the same diameter, 2) the lines are long enough, and 3) there's clearance to the tank/fairing you can install pretty much whatever you want. In the case of a Mille/Falco: It's the exact same forks and triple clamp, so you can install something made for a Mille on a Falco, no prob.
I installed the Gilles setup on my Falco. There's a reference there saying the lines were a little tight, but that's my fault for going with 80mm risers instead of the 60mm risers that Gilles recommend. <a href="http://www.twowheelracing.co.uk/falco/prod/riser.asp" target="top">Online Riser Article</a>
Regarding the Cycle Cat risers: I looked at them, but passed because the bars mount to the front of the fork leg and you trade away any comfort you gain from the additional height because there's a longer reach. That's the same reason I ditched the Two Bros risers for the Gilles. The net comfort gain was Zero. Now Cycle Cat apparently have a second style, that bring the bars closer to the rider. Excellent!
I still think the Gilles are better because you can convert the setup to straight clip-ons for a track day if you need. Though this would not matter if you never set foot on a track.

I would be very happy getting an inch higher than stock with more sweep to make the reach shorter. I also don't want the bike to look like it was boobytraped. I don't find any of what's out there now acceptable. The cycle cat system looks promissing, let's start the wave of e-mail so they can see we are interested.

After 40,000 miles these are the changes that bring me relief (besides the BMW I just added). The stuff that doesn't cost anything or very much is the following: First back off the compression screw completely and then screw the adjusters clockwise about a quarter of a turn. This really make a difference and you can always firm things up quickly when you need it. Now the front end will ride softer over bumps with the only drawback being a little more dive under hard braking. For the rear there is no compression adjustment so there is not much you can do short of an aftermarket shock. Softer, vibration absorbing grips help if you don't mind a slight loss of precision. Like somebody else mentioned, sheepskin saddle pads work, so do throttle rockers, a tank bag to lean against, and don't laugh, yeah those wooden bead seat covers as I found out last trip to the mountains cursing a blue streak until a friend got tired of my complaining, For the stuff that costs money absolutely the best - as others have mentioned - is the Sargent seat. I did 500 miles this weekend in bliss. Bar risers will help but then why ride a Falco? Other less obvious things are to change the gearing or fueling to cure some of the low speed snatchiness that's annoying if you do enough riding through villages. Don't buy the loudest aftermarket can ,which initially sounds sweet, then eventually gets on your nerves.

I would probably go to sleep riding a BMW, not to mention my friends would probably have to beat me up If I showd up on one. No offense sir but you can't compare the balls and character of a Falco with a BMW .That's why we would like to make our falcos a bit friendlier for longer rides. As soon as I'm becoming a fosil I'll buy a BMW, NOT. I can see a futura in my future.

I'm not trading my falco any time soon. I have the RSC carbon pipes and chip, evo race air box and velocity stacks. Synched throttle bodies, evo plate relocator, l.e.d. tail lights, carbon dash plate, carbon side panels and a fox twin clicker rear shock. I'm also considering a pair of superlite magnesium marvic wheels and I have a cool alloy/steel 42 t rear sprocket to install at the time the wheels go on. I'm impressed with this bike. After several ducatis, I'm not looking anywhere else. I just came back from Daytona, I only saw two other falcos there. A couple of my friends fell victim to the falcos brute torque, not very happy to see me take off and pass them front wheel in the air. The futura looks good but I'm not ready for one just yet. Enjoy riding, whatever it is that tikles you. It's all good I say, love living.

Amen to all that - and I'm not giving up mine either - the Falco is the best Italian bike I've ever owned and it gets better and better the more money I throw at it
Must have been your yellow Falco I saw in Daytona because yellow is pretty rare and it was one of only two I saw the whole time. Didn't get a close up look so I guess I missed out on the flames. Sure am jelous of those hoops your getting cause I'm busy saving my pennies for some lighter wheels too but I got a feeling its gonna take a while.

Just finshed 145 Miles 50-50 Interstate and Local. hands numb, back stops aching when I get off bike, and still pissed that I "chirped" the FRONT brake when a retread tire strip came flying up one lane over while on the interstate...
Maybe I'll meander over to the local Pub for a pint or two.

I have put 21k on my falco in less than year. I live in Western NC an all my miles are to work witch is 12 miles away or just out blasting around the back roads. It is stock all but my Aprilia carbon cans

My wife and I stopped at Waynesville on our way to Ashville (GWV) a few years back...Pretty country. We were suppose to stay at the Balsam Mountain Hotel, but it gave us the creeps.. Waynesville reminded us of a "movie location" town, we ate at the pub/restaurant downtown and stayed in a B & B.
Shoot. Growing up in the Orlando area many a folk had a summer condo at he beach Coco or New Smyrna (South of Daytona) kids turned 18, parents sold their condo's and moved to Maggie Valley area. Must be hell to have so many 60 - 70 year old Floridians living nearby it is here in SW Fla. :rollin:
