I've bought 2 good 'uns off ebay, though it'll be more difficult if you need it delivered. Fetched both of ours in the works trailer. I still think it's worth a look though, within 10 miles, and you might not need delivery. I could push one 10 miles if desperate enough.

go on ebay and auto trader. Don't buy any shitty cheap bike or it's not going to be all that reliable (i know lol).
There's other geared 50cc bikes other than the RS. Mainly depends what style bike you like.
Racing, supermoto and motocross.

Theres:
RS50
GPR50 (basically an RS)
RX50
SX50
Derbi senda
peugeot xr6 (shit bike imo)
derbi senda DRD

There's also some chinese imports and stuff going around.
As i said most of the bikes will do around the same speed. So it;s more about what style of bike you prefer.
What is your budget btw?

As for transport i just hired a transit connect van and got my dad to drive me there and back.

i think that the gpr has a different front fairing where the lights are and all the others are the same.

jst looked the gpr has the same back end and tank as the rs but has slightly different side and front fairings
