Idle system open circuit was the error that triggered the fault. After some tricky disassembly around the helmet storage area, the service tech followed the procedure for troubleshooting the fault and it resolved itself - so no cause could be determined. My best guess is that some of the connections were not clean or fully connected, and they benefitted from a little exercise...
