does anyone know where the Mana CVT unit comes from?
is it a design from Piaggio, or is it purchased from another manufacturer?

cheers,
Bluey

CVT's per-se are commonplace. I think what makes the Mana's system unique is its electronic control. The ETU is designed and built by Digitek, (The dashboard idiots, sorry, people) I think.

According to http://www.maxmoto.co.uk/gilera_850_ferro.shtml it's the same motor that in the begining was designed by Gilera (Piaggio owned) for a Ducati Monster beater called Gilera Ferro....

This bike was real cool and with brakes scooter style on the handlebars but when Aprilia came into the Piaggio Group it was decided that Gilera should not build bikes only scooters. Today the Mana motor is available in the Gilera GP 800 scooter...

It has the same motor but without shift and selectable auto modes, I will most likely have one of these as demo next year and Piaggio Sweden will let me use their demo in a week or so, can be fun to compare but I can already say the Mana will win hands down....

DP says: Would kill for a Ferro.....

That Gilera Ferro was the original dream bike I was hoping to buy in the US. it has both brakes on the handlebars and nicer tail pipe. The Mana was a bit cut down.

And the GP 800 has a chain drive for a maxi scooter :D

PR says he would equally of , if not killed, then been very excited by that!

I don't need the 'Paddle shift' I think its a wank. 'Sport' and 'Touring' would be fine. Hell! 'Touring' would be fine, there is little real difference in acceleration betwixt 'Sport' and 'Touring', it's just 'Sport' vibrates more so it feels faster! (Not 'Stopwatched' but done by counting in the head and up to 60MPH both figures are very similar!). The styling of the Gilera and the fact it has a proper rising rate rear suspension system mean it has it in handling terms over the Mana and it looks far sexier. Not that I don't like the Mana, just the Gilera is better:).

Gilera also has the history....... For an old fart like me that counts:bump::bump::bump:

The Gilera has a bit more of an aggressive, sportier appearance to me. I'm guessing that it doesn't have the front storage? With regard to the acceleration of the Mana in Sport vs. Touring mode, I notice a HUGE difference in acceleration if you are in Sport mode and push the RPM's into at least the 1st or 2nd RPM amber lights before shifting (in 1st gear for me, that means ~40MPH+ before changing to 2nd gear). You can be in Sport mode and shift 'early' -- making it feel very much like Touring mode with more vibration.

I ride in Sport Auto only; I prefer the engine braking over Touring Auto. I have yet to try Sport Gear. I can't imaging stop-light to stop-light Sport Gear mode would be quicker than Sport Auto. In Gear mode you run-up the RPMs in first but reduce the RPMs when you shift to second. But I would like to see somebody do an actual comparison.

Have done that, not on the clock though but it is faster with Gear mode than Sport Auto, although I never let off the gas, I hold it wide open and then go one orange, two orange, three orange, push +, one orange, two orange, three orange, push +, one orange, two orange, three orange, push + then I have hit 140-160kph much faster than in Auto Sport mode, atleast it feels like it and it's 1000% more fun.....

DP says: I have a picture of me on the Ferro at the Milan MC Show but can't find it, I'd rather have the bike...

Hi Groovymaster,

Actually the german magazine Motorrad did some tests, sport gear is faster than the auto modes:
