View Full Version : Questions after reading the (worthless) owners manual
HI All,
Hope some of you guys can help on these questions. I read the owners manual last nite, thought is was pretty useless than but thought perhaps because I was tired I'd try again today. and it's no better.
I got a cursory intro to the bike from the tech yesterday, but now I have the questions.
When I turn the key on it asks me to set my user code? Where do I get the user code? Is this something I create myself? I followed the steps to the obtaining the code but since I don't have one, didn't want to monkey with it.
Also, a bit confused as to how to change the display. Is it possible to make the display so it ALWAYS displays the tripmeter reading, as this is how I always use as a ref. to see how much gas I have.
Also, if I unhook the battery does it clear out all the settings? As on earlier aprilias? Tho I think as long as you leave the 30 amp fuse in place it won't?
Lastly, I can't find any reference to breakin RPMs. neither in the manual or on the labels on the tank, so does that mean I can run it as I want to?
Thoroughly confused, but thankfully it's raining so can just fiddle all day with it.

Hey Chris,
This is what I know - which I've only managed to glean from careful and repeated reading of the manual and some experimentation.
There is a user code which you can set yourself. This is apparently supposed to allow you to start the bike if there is a problem with the immobiliser (!). To set it up, you need to have both the keys your were given with the bike. Go to 'Code Reset' and you will get a message to enter Key 2. There is a countdown clock - I think it was 20 seconds. Slide the first key out and insert the second key. You will then get the chance to enter your own personal code.
In terms of the run in revs, the bike should have come set up with the rev limiter at 6000rpm which is the recommended limit for the 600 miles/ 1000km run in period. This will be extended after your first service.
Not sure about the answers to the other questions. I haven't disconnected the battery yet, but I'd assume you'd lose all the trip 1 and trip 2 data. Not sure.
Enjoy!
Thanks very much Wolf, I got to the insert second key (damn sounds we're launching nukes or something!) and saw the countdown thing and was absolutely afraid to go any further, thanks for the confirm on that. I had visions of setting a code and never being able to start the bike again! ;)

I did disconnect the battery. I don't recall any significant adverse effects, but I may have lost the trip counts.
Thanks for the stuff on the user code BTW. Handy.
I bought a workshop manual because I wanted to know how to replace the bulbs in the rear lights, and the user manual was obviously complete bollox on this.
If anyone wants a manual PM me

use you do set the "Code" WRITE IT DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!
if you ever want replacement keys programmed your dealer MUST have that code.
we dont set them, we just leave them blank.....the immobilizer still functions normally.

I was advised by my mechanic to leave it blank too.
He said it makes his life much easier as it sometimes caused problems with re-mapping and suchlike.
Once I've set the display to trip that is where it stays.

I haven't set a user code either, My mechanic said not to bother setting one, mine also flashes insert user code when I put the key into start it.
I bought a workshop manual off Ebay, (no doubt the same one as Burty's?)
It is superb, colour photo's and all the information you will ever need, it also has a wiring diagram included. I have found it very usefull for torque settings etc...
It's without question a well worthy a purchase!! I highly recomend it! My bike broke down the day I bought it and without it I might not have picked it up, the engine turned over but wouldn't fire up, the fault finding section told me to check the fuel injection relay, my dealer replaced it and hey presto it worked!!

Oh no your kidding!! it is the manual but it's on disk, it should have said that on the ebay page?
Email them and tell them, you want to cancel it, I'm sure they will be fine about it, tell them you didn't realize you already had it.
Good luck
