A mate of mine just bought the new 2003 RSVR (the Bastard!) and I believe it has different gearbox ratios to my 2002 RSV.

I think 1, 2 3 are longer and 4, 5, 6 are shorter. But does anyone know if the front sprocket still needs to be changed from the 17 tooth standard sprocket to a 16 tooth in order to get better drive out of corners, or is the gearing better left as is?

Thanks

Scott

you can find the info requested by going to the aprilia website and print out the specs on the 03 mille r and then the standard mille, i am pretty sure the 03 rsvr only has the new close ratio gearbox, my 03 has been set-up with the standard 17 front but i went to a 44 on the rear, i got the results i was expecting, if needed i will print the new and old ratio's if you are unable to find, matter of fact my owners manual is at arm reach for both my 00 rsvr and my 03 rsvr here is the data: pre-03 primary 31/60 1st 14/35 2nd 16/28 3rd 19/26 4th 22/24 5th 23/22 6th 27/23 now 03 primary 31/60 1st 15/34 2nd 19/31 3rd 20/26 4th 22/24 5th 25/24 6th 26/23 so now ratio's old 1-6 1/2,500 2/1.750 3/1.368 4/1.090 5/0.956 6/0.851 new 03 1-6 1/2.267 2/1.632 3/1.300 4/1.091 5/0.960 6/0.885. it appears the only common is 4th gear at 22/24 and final drive at 17/42 this info is from factory manual and the 1.090 vs. 1.091 conflict is right from the book, my info leads me to believe the euro bikes have a 16 tooth front as standard equipment???

Gidday Scott,
I'm pretty sure that models imported new to NZ (Australian/Jap versions) manufactured in 2003 both RSV's and RSVR's have the same new close ratio box.
Incidently both also have the dual mapping eprom unlike the USA versions.
Your mates a lucky man.....I wonder what colour ? I hear that there 2 yellows ones pre sold due in the next shipment later this year, 1 Black one in CHCH and thats it for this model.
I've got a Black 2002 RSVR with the old box and it really needs a 16 Front and or a 44 Rear.....I would be interested to hear how the new box goes.

Cheers Grant.

Hi,

I am running a 15t front with a 42t Rear... tops out at 146 mph... but boy does it get there fast....still very much in control...but this I believe is the gearing it should of come with...(own personal Opinion)

Also the 98-00 Air boot makes a difference to the Mid range..

I have graphs for all my mod, and can E-mail..

To date:

Quil End can
PCIII
EVO Race Air
98-00 Air boot
Sealed Tubes :D

118 ->126BHP at the Wheel...

Suspension set to Aprilia Track spec.. make's the handle extra better than it already is.

with all of the above....I have had a grin everytime I ride...what a Bike.

54mm's are next..

Mr. D. Mouse,

<> tops out at 146 mph <>
Did you mean this to be 156?

Are you running Mini Cooper tires? Perhaps the D. Mouse ears contribute to an exponential rise in drag coefficient? Have one of your UK bretheren stolen a bolt from the rear disk? Fook mi

I'm changing over to 15/43 gearing right now. This will top out between 153-154MPH. Should be spot-on coming into Summit Point's Turn 1 cones next Monday.

Your a funny man..:D

But yes last time I look at the speedo... have rev light set to 10,000 and it showed 146 mph..

Remember the 03 has a different Gear Box... but all that aside when you can get to 146 mph very very very fast... its great... out of a bend squrt... were did they go...

My mate is in Christchurch and got the black 2003 RSVR. Another mate here in Auckland just told me he had a yellow one on order, but another Black RSVR will be availiable in 3 weeks and it has his name on it.

Im looking forward to test riding them....and I wont redline the new bikes or ride them hard...honest!!!:D

Mouse, I'd love to get a copy of those also. I just purchased a U.S. version 03 RSV and have been kicking around the idea of lowering the gearing, seems high to me. I need to look when I get home, I'm not even sure what comes stock on it.

I have the 2003 R. Same question on gearing? what is desired? I will be attending the honda hoot next week, and aprilia should be there. May be this question will be answered(2003RSVR to 16 tooth or not, that is the question) BRUCE

Mr. D Mouse,

I based my 15/43 and 153-154MPH on 10,500RPM.
Yes, factoring 15/42 and 146MPH on 10,000RPM with
a modest 6th gear change explains the difference.

You'll enjoy the 54mm TBs. They'll move the HP peak several hundred RPM further up to just below 10,000 RPM and pull hard from 7K up.

Suggest inspecting the head to TB gaskets. The older models experienced up to 1mm of squish into the bore in the bolt areas when torqued down. A Dremel tool with 120 grit wheels cleans 'em right up.
