View Full Version : New Tuono and a strange rattling noise - any ideas?
Just purchased a new 03 Tuono and I notice a rattling cam chain style noise when accelerating from low speeds...is this common?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
I had a noisy tuono from new also sounded like a lot of valve clearance on a front cylinder valves - checked the clearances
and were on spec.
I had complained to the local dealer about the noise at the 600 mi. -said it was normal at 2000+ I called Touringsport in Greenville SC,had me ride over for a listen,Frank owner & Aprilia guru thought it was the cam tensioner , called the Aprilia rep got an OK the repair ,found the front chain tensioner was frozen
The bill Was $0.00:D :D except for the goodies they tempt with while you wait

Check the final drive chain slack, that can slap against the swinging arm if there's too much slack in it, especially when accelerating from low revs,
Chris,
Thanks Guys....finally found the problem....two separate issues.
1. The bike has just had a factory recall...the dealership wouldn't say too much, but they replaced the valve springs.
The loud ticking noise has now gone from the front cyclinder.
2. You're right....the drive chain rattles if not tensioned past where I normally like it....how dumb is that.
I had the bike up on the rear stand and was working some lube into the chain, then started it up and let it drive for a bit....the chain started slapping so hard it nearly threw the bike off the stand.
Thanks for the replies

I have a noise on an 05 Tuono, sounds like chain hitting the cases at low revs under load(box of rocks noise, bad). I bought the bike used with 6k mi, now almost 9K, suspect the tensioner. Had the same issue with a VTR and changed the tensioners a couple times to get rid of the noise. Twins are hard on tensioners.

You get a lot of chain slap if you have tight links, too.

Is the recall just for certain serial numbered bikes?? Have not heard of this?
Wow just noticed the thread date????

Check that your spark plugs are nice and tight. A friend of mine had a nasty noise coming from near one of the cylinders. Thought it was the cam chain tensioner but turned out to be a plug that had worked its way loose.

Hey Kram (interesting name ...), was the loud ticking noise from the front cylinder super loud and high-pitched when you started the engine from cold, and then quieted down once the oil pressure came up?
Also, had you ever noticed any alum bits in the oil you drain out of it?
Any more info on that recall would be VERY appreciated. My '03 Falco has started doing this after 30,000 very babied miles and I am woefully disappointed.

Recall was for missing inner valve springs, very limited no's only affected.
If the noise is oil pressure related you probably have a bung tensioner.

thanks Dave, hopefully that's all it is.
Got any slick tricks for removing the front one without pulling all the cooling plumbing by any chance?
