View Full Version : My first oil change - going to synthetic
Just finished up the first oil change and decided to put Motul 300v in the bike. Right off I noticed the shifting is butter smooth to the point I can hardly even feel the "click". The clutch pull seems to be lighter as well, not sure why that would be.
The bike has 4600 miles on it and this is it's 3rd oil change. It had the 600 mile service then the oil was changed again when I had the flywheel weight removed at 1700 miles. I had been running Castrol Vtwin 20w x 50.
I cleaned the oil screen, replaced the filter and replaced all the cheesy click clamps with real hose clamps. I discovered that when the oil is done draining you can put the bike up on a rear stand and more oil will come out. Put it back on the side stand and even more oil will come out. I did this two or three times to make sure I had as much of the blended oil out as I could get. FWIW, I had put in total of 3500 ml and it put the oil dead center between the min and max lines (following kzmille's instructions on checking the oil).
I had read and read about oil to the point I figured it out! There is no right answer :bangwall:
Some may say I am going to full synthetic too early but we'll see how it goes. If everything is fine with the clutch I imagine I'll stay with this oil.
Just figured I'd post my experience.

I went full synthetic (Repsol 15w-50) at 600 miles.
I'm at 3000 miles now and it's running great.

Funny! I have about the same amount of miles as you and I have also done three oil changes too!! And I was thinking of trying the same oil as what you just used!.. Kinda wierd. :D
I was not using Castrol though. Don't care for it.:cigar: I used nothing but what the bike came with from factory. Synthetic!! No issues.:cigar:
Anyway, how did you like the flywheel weight removal? Did you notice any difference? I actually forgot about this "mod"...:)

The mucky mucks from AF1 said the Tuonos come shipped with synthetic already in them.
So if you change to petroleum based oils, you are down grading from the get go.
I accidently put Maxima entry level in for the 2nd oil change, then went to Motul full synth after that, 7100 I think?

My T now has 9200 miles, 4 oil changes so far, always Motul 300V, exactly 3800 ml will get you to the max line, with 200 ml for top offs until next change (oil comes in 4l can)
Bike has been running awesome and without any problems whatsoever....
While 300v Motul might be an overkill and a bit more expensive I simply do not care.....at least engine is safe....

If you disconnect the spark plugs and thumb the starter a few times, you'll probably get even more out.

Ok, white wheels are a huge :plus: and I just noticed the front piece below the headlights! All black with the red insert.... You prick.. I thought of that first along time ago...:chillpill I was just too damn lazy to get out and have it painted.
hmmmmmm, do I have a stalker? :D You must be my mini me! :kidding:
I wish I could give you an honest opinion of the flywheel mod but I realized my bike was running really lean well after the mod. So when I had the mod done I couldn't tell a huge difference because my bike wasn't running it's full potential to begin with. Regardless, it did feel like it climbed the RPMs faster and was snappier. It's one of those mods that make a subtle difference from what I can tell and is best used in combination with the other mods.
Back to the oil, I found it strange that I had trouble finding the torque settings for the oil filter cover bolts. When I took them off they were not very tight at all so I assume they were probably set to 12-15nM.

I usually torque mine to "snug"!! LOL It has a large o-ring so it doesn't need to be super tight. But if I had the actual torque values then I would too.
I know what underwear you put on this morning! (stalking you) LOLOLOLOL
