View Full Version : Pegaso Trail low guard and crash bars

Here is a picture of my bike with extensions on the low guard and with the crash bars I fitted.

I ended up modifying Givi crash bards for an XT660. This ended up being more work than I thought (given the Yam has the same engine). However, I think it was worth it. They offer much more protection than crash pads and look better and appear stronger than Hepco and Becker crash bars.

I simply added a normal soft mudflap to the lower part of by front guard ($7) and modified a mountainbike mud guard ($19) for the upper part of the lower guard. Cheap and effectivee (and I don't think that it looks that bad).

Excellent mods Frodo, I may have a go at the mudflaps myself. The crash bars may be beyond me though.

Well done Frodo, looks great... What kinda mods were necessary to get them to fit?

New brackets needed to be welded to the top tubes - I got a metalworker to do this. I had hoped that because the motor is the same as the XT660, that no substantial mods would be needed. I also had to cut slots for the lower mounting points to fit through the belly pan, but this was not difficult.

Its a Givi bar for a Yam XT660. Same motor so I thought it would be a straight fit. It wasn't, but with the modifications it was still worth it. I've had others comment on how good the bars look. The Hepco bars look very ugly.

The modifications are quite obvious. I can make some close up photos of the modified attachment points if you want.

Frodo,

I think you have made an excellent job.

If you would be willing to make up some decent drawings and add a few photo's, I, for one, would be willing to pay the cost of a few beers for a copy !

I've posted some close up photos here: http://picasaweb.google.com/Frodophoto/PegasoMods

I didn't take the bars off for better photos, because the installation with the belly pan is actually quite tricky. From memory the lower attachment points needed to be lengthened a little. New attachment points were needed for the top.

Its fairly obvious what needs to be done once you hold the Givi bars up against the Peg (without the belly pan), but you do need some metalworking/welding skills. There's more modification than you would expect, given that the motor is identical to the Yam XT660 (the problem is that the frame is not).

Once the modification is done, it is a little tricky cutting a hole in the right place in the belly pan to insert the lower connections. I made holes rather larger than necessary (next time they will be perfect) but covered up the gaps with tape. The hassle is because the XT660 does not have a belly pan (the Tenere does). Although the pan is only plastic it does sheild the engine from stones flung up from the front wheel.

To finish I sprayed with matt black paint.

You might ask:

Why did I not get Hepco and Becker bars? Because I think that these look better.
Why did I not get knobs? Because they provide little protection off sealed roads (especially for the very exposed water pump).
Why did I not get custom built bars? Because the metalworking shop I contacted said they could not bend the tubing as tightly and as neatly as Givi had done.

very nice pics!
but i m afraid we re all interested about how is the mod from the inside of the belly protector also..
would it be very difficult if you take some pictures of it also?
i m about to buy the crash bars next week and because not many people have the time or the will to help or give time to do something like that,i must do it by myself.
so i would like to know about what tools and needs i must buy to adjust the bars on my strada...
i m asking for so much because i too do not have much free time and so i m trying to buy some through your experience..!
thank you in advance!

I love the bars Frodo, looking to do something similar. Have only had my Peg just over a couple of months but planning a big trip through central Australia and Arnehm Land and looking to either build a alu bash plate or some bars (or both). Protecting the water pump is my main issue and your bar does a great job of that.
First I need to get a new footpeg and gear lever though. Hit a wombat tonight and the footpeg and gear lever probably stuck up it's butt. Gear lever sheared off at the gearbox so that is going to be a pain.

The modification does require welding. I thought that because the Peg has the same motor as the XT660, the Givi bars from the XT660 would fit stright on. The problem is that they fit onto the frame and hence need modification.

Here are some close up photos of the bars. It is a bit tricky to fit the lower end of the bars through the belly pan and so I have not taken it off for the photos. There are two strips of electrical tape to cover the holes in the belly pan where the lower bar ends go in.

The bars are very solidly mounted (probably better than the H&B bars as they don't stick out as far). They would also give some protection to the radiator (but less than the H&B bars).

Hope this helps.

Great Job, have you dropped it yet, non testing porposes...?
I have gone down 2 times already and the crash bars have paid for themselves...

I've got the H&B ones, don't wrap round which is a shame but easy to fit and take a set of Ring Micro lights OK :) (need to reduce the electrical tape though!)

Hey Frodo

Where did you get the Mountain Bike Guard from? I'm not finding any wide enough?

From the local cycle shop. Sorry I can't remember the brand.

I've now fitted the guard from a 2004 Pegaso, which is a much better solution as far as controlling road spray and I reckon it looks heaps better (I've posted pics previously and I noticed that someone posted photos of a red Trail for sale with the 2004 front guard). I ordered it direct from Germany, cheaper and quicker than ordering from the local dealer.
