Does Akro make pipes specifically for the Tuono or does one use the '02 Mille version?

A number of us here have Akrapovic full systems on our Tuonos. I have the Evolution 2 into 1 made for the '02 Mille and it fit up fine. Good power gains, nice and loud, and good build quality.

Those are Akros, right? I noticed the size of the outlets is the size normally found on their singles. Don't the duals usually have small outlets? The SBK sytem does especially, as well as the Akro 2-2 dual. That tigcraft pic a few threads back looks monstrous, but the midrange has gotta suck with a 3" pipe!

The size of the outlets are larger than the cans that come with the system. He put on different Akrapovic cans with 63mm inlet and outlets.

Just put the Arkrapovic, titianum slip on on my 2003 Tuono. Fit perfect and sounds awesome. Build quality is the best I have ever scene. Took out airbox restrictor and put in new chip at sametime. Runs SO MUCH better.

63mm inlets and outlets?

Could you give me the model number of that can. I'm looking at an Akrapovic parts catalogue and there seems to be no such thing. Also, what is the length, in millimeters, of the silencer?

When I went to Akrapovic in Slovenia last year to develop my exhaust system I was given two choices: One, build a system off of there current range of silencers, or two, create my own system from the ground up. The latter would have cost a fortune. I'm assuming you have built your system from existing Akrapovic parts? Here's the full range of Akrapovic silencers for racing and evolution systems. The largest inlet/outlet on the standard silencer is 60mm. The largest inlet/outlet on the "Largo" silencer ("Large" silencer for single sided systems) is 65mm. But 63mm does not exist. Length can vary depending on which silencer you choose. The numbers you see below are (inlet mm) / (length mm) / (outlet mm).

63mm!

Are you measuring the outside diameter of the pipe?

Ahaha!

Baiku,
Those are the "M-TCLE5" cans that are indeed listed as 65mm, but that's the INLET ID. The OUTLET ID is what you see in the photos, and is 63mm (but I don't think Akra lists the outlet dimension anywhere in their highly convoluted site).

You can also just make out the stepped adaptor rings I needed to machine up allowing the M-TCLE5's to mate up with the standard Akra "link pipes" (which are 60mm OD)....sound is DEFINITELY "different"....:p :p :p

Why isn't the tank carbon? And the chain guard?

Baiku Inochi
06-22-2003, 01:05 AM
I see. So you opted for the "Largo", the larger and heavier silencer normally used on single-sided systems.

rustie6
06-22-2003, 01:19 AM
Yes......it is indeed larger, but only an ounce or two heavier at best (gotta love that C/F!) The single Evo cans are slightly larger in their oval diameter (5.525" vs 5.150"), but the length is exactly the same as the standard 2-2 cans. Akra also makes C/F loops for these larger oval cans (TL5), which are REQUIRED.

The original twin standard C/F cans had a measly, internally necked down 1.890" (48mm) ID....a BIG difference from 63mm.......

rustie6

The last C/F chain guard I got was a total POS because it looked like this:

<img src="http://www.wpsinc.net/auctionphotos/ChainGuards1c.jpg" style="border:0;"/>

As to a C/F Tank.......not yet (just point me to it!!!), but I do have this under the tank (kinda like yours):

Baiku Inochi
06-22-2003, 01:34 AM
Yes, I realize that. The system I have created uses 60mm-60mm evolution 3 silencer with a modified interior and MUCH shorter length. The head pipes all the way to the silencer were made by me. I tried building the system with a 65mm diameter but lost power due to lack of back pressure. Also, weight was a major factor for me. With much effort, I have gotten the bike down to 164kg (or 362lbs, starter motor removed and empty fuel tank). I think the factory bike weighed 162kg.

Ah yes, the EVR box. Not like mine. Add an inch of air at the top (due to the EVR top), and add 4 inches of air to the bottom (due to the design of my air box). Mine's about twice the volume as the EVR.

rustie6
06-22-2003, 01:42 AM
More volume is definitely better. Do you know what the Liter displacement is?

Baiku Inochi
06-22-2003, 01:46 AM
I have made no attempt to measure the exact volume, but I know it's the most you can fit under that tank. Unless someone wants to redesign the frame, tank, and motor, and their respective positions.

Here ya go:

www.1000ps.at/produkte_detail.asp?id=342 (http://www.1000ps.at/produkte_detail.asp?id=342)

Incidentally, where did you get that P.O.S. C/F chain guard? So I know not to get one there.

I was thinking of getting a gloss one and taking it to my painter and having him lightly sand it and then recoat it with a matte clear coat. Either that or having the whole bike redone with a gloss clear coat.

rustie6
06-22-2003, 02:06 AM
Well, we would all certainly be interested. Check out the actual volume of your airbox and get back ASAP. You might be able to sell some.....what's the cost?

As to a "lack of " back pressure, I've never known that to effect max power.....maybe midrange or low end, but rarely top end. These big cans never caused any loss of power anywhere in the powerband of my stock engine.....if anything, bottom and mid became even sharper and more explosive......:p :p :p

But, if you were truly worried about the "lack of", substantially shortening up the cans would do exactly the same thing (if not more so). You might want to lengthen them back up and gain some HP. Food for thought there......

rustie6
06-22-2003, 09:53 AM
Immoralist,
That C/F chain guard was made by a company named "American" something or other (go figure). I sent it back because it was so friggen bad. Been looking for another good one, but most seem to be in the UK.

One idea I've used to soften the gloss on these C/F parts is "extra fine" Scotch Brite pads, which you can find at most any hardware store. The finer the pad, the less it "scratches", and just dulls the finish. If you do it evenly enough, you may not need to repaint with a matte clear at all......8o 8o 8o

<strong>So, anybody out there know of a quality C/F guard???</strong>

theImmoralist
06-22-2003, 10:50 AM
Rustie,

Thanks for the heads up on American whatever C/F parts. I've seen them for sale and have thought about ordering.

I might just order an Aprilia C/F chain guard. My '00 RSVR came with one, but the Tuono R didn't. Go figure. Of course, it will probably take six months to get it.

In December of '02 I ordered the Aprilia C/F taillight surround for the '02 RSVR. It just showed up last week! I guess they had to get some guy in Noale to make one by hand or something.

rustie6
06-22-2003, 11:03 AM
Yep......that's the SAME damn problem I'm having with all my Aprilia parts.......and they are all PREPAID too:

1) Right Mirror
2) OZ rear wheel/gold (they actually had the front in stock)
3) Those special "Truss Head" S/S fairing bolts (lost a couple already)
4) Rear Mille Cowl (ordered the C/F version from Paul too....but they're not yet available either)

It's been TWO friggen months and NOTHING!!! WTF is wrong with Aprilia anyway? They've got this stuff over in IT, why not just ship the crap already???

There is no open top on my air box. The tank IS the top. It's a perfect seal. Ever seen a Ducati air box? Or, better yet, go to a Moto GP race, go to the paddock, LOOK AT EVERY SINGLE BIKE'S AIR BOX!

milleX2

i can see ducati corse/works type airboxes in my garage and have worked with more ama/wera superbikes than some people have had hot meals and the airboxes that have been on the last handful ama title winning bikes have a lid whether inline 4 or v-twin, these boxes are handmade and very effective, sealing under throttle bodies/carbs systems have been around a long time and were primarily used to control heat not increase volume in the airbox, i have my reasons for not preferring that design

rhansen162

teh QB Carbon chain guards are an exact match to the Aprilia ones in materials (weave/pattern), and are about 1 1/2" longer (same length as the stock plastic ones). The C/F ones are shorter than stock and don't cover the end of the sprocket...some have complained that they allow oil spray up the back of your leg/bike.

another comment to the thread above. Sebimoto makes a C/F gas tank, available through www.yoyodyneti.com. It's the 2000 model shape, but it still fits on the newer bikes and your pump fits as well. It's light, it's like holding a plastic bag in your hand, definately not for street riding but if you're after total weight savings on the track, it's the set-up to use.

there are a couple of shops importing QB stuff, just not the stuff for aprilia's. Do a quick google search. A few months back I called a few of the shops I found and they had no problems ordering the aprilia stuff, they just didn't list it or carry it in their shops.

Or, you can go through QB directly. I've done so 3 times and had no problems at all, actually it was quite painless and their customer service dept is phenominal!

rustie6,

Have you looked into Sebimoto? I have both QB Carbon and Sebimoto products. Although, Sebimoto is more racing oriented I have found their products to be much stronger and higher spec carbon than QB...

Just a thought...
