Just found this forum, have had my Tuono for 1700 miles, great bike! Being an old fart that just got back into riding, I've found that I have a newfound caution that I didn't have in the old days! With the performance that this bike offers, I find myself using the mid-range rather than the top end around here to preserve my license and insurance. Knowing that the mid-range is flat, I'm looking to boost the 4-7K performance without breaking the bank. My dealer is trying to sell me a $290 airbox, Power Commander ($300), Aprilia race can ($549), and a Mid-pipe ($79) to do this, and I'm not sure that's the right thing to do at this point. Would I not be better off doing a Arkopovic slip on, pulling the restrictor tube out of the airbox, and maybe the eprom chip? Any advice would be appreciated!

If you don't want to spend any money take the restrictor out of air box then take the restrictor out of the stock pipe and see how you like it. I did this befor I did any mods to my bike and it helped. Since then I've put on the evo air box and fuel press. kit synced. the throttle bodies put on the tit. evo race can and had a custom eprom chip mapped to my bike. and I LOVE it.
Good luck

it cost nothoing but time to do, and if not happy with that.....

i'd add a slipon/fp chip/hi-flow airfilter/15 tooth counter sprocket at $500-600 tops....

and all can be installed buy YOU, and not a dealer so don't spend any $ on labor until you are sure about what it is you need/want.

even look at used equipment here and at ebay!

YOu really want to get the Aprilia derestriction chip when you remvoe the restrictor in the airbox and pipe. It isn't gterribly pricey at something like $79, if I remember correctly. It has a map that can take advantage of the extra air.

Thanks for the help, guys! It looks like the easiest way to start out is with the factory chip, pulling the air box restrictor tube, and adding a slip-on can. Next question: which slip-on works the best, considering both performance and noise. I don't want something that is going to break windows, but that sounds smooth with a little more growl to it!

If you remove the restrictor from the stock pipe, it breathes pretty well, although the noise it makes is a little underwhelming. The fact that it weighs in excess of 20 pounds, doesn't help, but you don't need to be in any great hurry to replace it, especially if you think you might like a full system down the road. Save your money in the short term.

Most of the folks I know on Tuonos have either a full system or the Aprilia Racing slip on. I really like the noise it makes, although I'm pretty sure my neighbours aren't so fond of it. I tend to roll down the block before letting the bike warm up. I sit right next to a Harley parked on the street and wait until it is showing at least 100 degrees F. Hopefully, all his neighbours think its him :D

the end can weight is 17-18 lbs. the total stock system is around 24 lbs. as it came off my tuono.

imo

buy a dual system

Dont forget, with a dual system you might have interference problems with the heals of your boots and also passenger peg fitment issues. No?

Thanks for the recommendations. I ordered the factory chip today, and am going to do that along with pulling the restrictor tube out of the air box and the standard muffler. I'll try that for a while, then probably order the Akrapovic carbon slip on to go with it. I was able to hear the factory dual race system today, and it's a little too loud for my taste...I'm deaf enough right now thanks to being around airplanes for the last 35 years! The dealer here in Richmond said that he has done this on his personal Tuono and that it makes a tremendous difference from 4-7K rpm.

The Akrapovic 2 into 1 slip-on is quiter than the RSC/Arrow slip-on, but you are mistaken if you think that the 2 into 2 systems are louder . I know some of the 2 into 2 systems are pretty loud (TIG, D & D, Renegade), but both the Akrapovic and Arrow 2 into 2 systems are quiter than the 2 into 1 slip-ons. They are quite expensive, and there are other issues, like the loss of pass pegs which can be addressed (RSC kit which allows modification of left peg so you can run the RSC SBK 2 into 2 with the passenger pegs).

Don't forget about an airbox upgrade! An Evoluzione race airbox kit was the last tuning change performed on my 2000.5 RSV (which also has the SP Ti shotgun + Factory Pro chip) and it provided a very healthy increase in the midrange response. Noise also goes up some, it creates that signature low-frequency intake boom high performance twins are noted for. Quicker acceleration- and aural bliss- are but a twist o' the wrist away! It is a great mod for $$$:grin ratio.

do you think the airbox mod really made the difference or just the higher flow air filter? The box mod seems pricey for not alot of gain..

Dawg, I'm an old guy like you(55) & own a Tuono & just love the Akro slip-on. It is just loud enough & has a great sound but I would get the Ti & not the Carbon Fiber. I hear it last longer on big twins. I also like the look better. the CF tends to get dull. With the Ti you just wipe it down once in awhile with WD-40 & it looks great!
